Man Behind the Curtain

When you hide in a pinch, choose one and describe:

– You find a spot which allows you use of your hands

– You will not be able to be seen unless you move from your spot

– You can hide a creature/puppet/object of your size or smaller along with you

The “Thief” background allows you to pick two. An advanced move called Acrobatic Contortionist adds another choice:

– You hide safely in a spot that would otherwise be too high up, cramped, or dangerous

I think this fits well because a puppetmaster would survive close combat about as well as a pencil would a wood-chipper, but it feels like I’m missing something. What do you think?

I have an idea for a game I’m running, where the party is currently (unbeknownst to them) being hunted by a particular demon’s hounds. I’m borrowing from Hounds of the Morrigan, but initially the hounds will be disguised as people. But I want to introduce it in a way that would reflect the characters catching a glimpse, but if they do a double-take, it seems like nothing was there.

An example could be

GM: “You look around the marketplace, you see stalls selling various wares and tools, the odd imported spice or fruit send unfamiliar scents through the air. Behind the well you notice a small man in a black cloak watching you intently. There are people listening to a preacher near the Temple of Fire. What do you do?”

Player: “What’s the man in the cloak doing?”

GM: “What man in a cloak?”

Player: “You said there was a man by the well”

GM: “There’s nobody by the well…”

My concern is that this would look like I messed up as GM, and would be (deliberately) confusing for the players. The first time. But when the second or third figure is caught ‘out of the corner of the eye’, the players might cotton on?

Am I expecting too much, or could this work?

It turns out my campaign front is revolving around dark forces and devil worshiping cults.

It turns out my campaign front is revolving around dark forces and devil worshiping cults.  Here’s a custom move I plan to use.  Originally I wrote it for a specific book, but I thought I’d generalize it.

When you spend a day of downtime reading from the blasphemous pages of a vile book, roll +WIS.  On a success the GM will tell you a valuable and useful piece of secret information regarding the book’s subject.  On a 7-9 select one below:

• You read about a particularly disgusting ritual, take the Sick Debility (cannot choose this if you are already Sick).

• You read about infernal forces, the knowledge of which plagues your thoughts.  Take the Confused Debility (cannot choose this if you are already Confused).

• A foul presence touches your mind.

• The book disintegrates in your hands.

My idea for the foul presence is that a diabolical force will gain 1 Hold on the PC, and can claim that Hold to cause the PC to perform an action that it desires at a later time.

Stupid Question: Unlike D&D, STR is not added to damage in Dungeon World, yes? Or did I miss something?

Assuming I’m correct, what do people think about a class feature for an artifically-boosted character that allows him to do that? It’d be a class-based modification of Hack and Slash, and possibly Volley for muscle-powered weapons.

Too powerful? Too wimpy?

I’m starting a new game and one of the players wants a character like Nightcrawler, who can teleport.

I was recently reminded of the Madness rules I wrote a while back, so I revisited them, and added some stuff for the Barbarian. I’ve enabled comments if anyone wants to leave feedback.

(And before someone asks; this was going to be part of a larger project, and Madness Bonds and Fear Alignments were other people’s work I was tying into. Short form is that Madness Bonds are new bonds like “I will show _______ the truth of the Old Ones” and Fear Alignments were just new alignments that reinforced insane behavior.)
