If I may be forgiven a personal note, this is the last Dungeon Starter I worked on before my dad died. Some Tavern patrons have asked me over the last couple of years why I’ve written so many and the simple answer is that it was a means I used to cope while caring for my parents. This seems a fitting tribute in a way.

The Ice Mines of Kharzak-Thrune

The Ice Mines of Kharzak-Thrune

The Ice Mines of Kharzak-Thrune

The mines have no gate or fence. The guards don’t even bother to lock the cells. The Mountain itself is the prison. The cold, the snow, the wyverns, they’re the prison. Ask any old timer, the best guess it’s 5 to 7 days to even get to the treeline, you’d freeze to death before that. Anyone asking to help with an escape is probably just looking to eat you when the food runs out. At least if you’re useful in the mines, the Dwarves will keep you feed. Live out the remainder of your days in this frozen hell hole or die escaping. The choice is yours.

What did you do to get in The Mines?

For the sneaky character: What useful item have you kept secreted on your person?

For the combative character: What is always nearby that can be used as a weapon in a pinch?

For the magical character: What magical ore is sometimes unearthed in the mine and how could it be useful?

For the spiritual character: What unquiet spirits are in the mines/on the mountain?

Which NPC has asked to join them in an escape attempt?

What flaw in the system or schedule can be exploited during an escape attempt?

I recently prepared an updated file for a friend running a Dungeon World, a Dungeon World novice care package and module update to my to my Zenopus Files collection. He wanted a dungeon to try out with his kids.

This was the first dungeon that I converted for Dungeon World and the first dungeon I ever played back in a previous century when I was very young. I remember I added a Smaug style dragon for no really good reason in a “second level” except I had read and loved Tolkien’s The Hobbit. I played with my very young sister and allowed her to befriend the dragon and “conquer” the level in a “Monty Haul” epic.

Now my niece loves the Jackson films and has updated her own version of Dumb Ways to Die song to include icy orcs and dragon fire.

The 2015 issue of the “One Page Dungeon Compendium” is up on DTRPG. I’ve posted the previous compendiums before, but you can find links to them on the same page at the 2015 issue. They’re “pay what you want”, and have some nice dungeons for one-shots, side treks, and ideas.

“The player’s characters are a group at the service of a vast kingdom regent from the East, who possess a great rival kingdom to the west They are following the trail of an Elf spy who stole military secret plans.

The chase has led them to the town further west in their kingdom, a harbour commanded by a noble man whose loyalty to the king is questionable. This is the exit door for the Elf spy, unless the player characters can stop him and prevent the plans to fall into the hands of the enemy kingdom.”
