Hey all.

Hey all.

Hey all. Here’s the first episode of my new Dungeon World AP! It’s part of the Comic Strip AP series, so it’s in short (15 minutes) punchy episodes with no fluff.

This is the story of Alford Soultaker, a criminal and monster hunter banished to a frozen penal colony for a mysterious crime. A cursed sword is involved…

I am pleased to announce the newest member of the Comic Strip AP family, Dungeon World: Alford Soultaker! This one is being produced by Oli Jeffery and Rob Bullen (with show notes helpfully provided by Michael G. Barford). This one is really strong from a narrative perspective. Oli & Rob’s RP is solid, and they have managed to tell a lot of story in a very short amount of time. I’m excited to hear where this one goes!

My son likes his Wizard character but also likes to try different things with him. So I used my Out of the frying pan… (Skyrim) primer and we spent so much time working on the new world that we didn’t even get a chance play. But here are his answers to the questions. Note that A) he is VERY familiar with Skyrim, but went out of his way to come up with some very non-Skyrim answers and B) he’s only 15 (well, he turns 15 in three weeks)!

What did you do that you are here to be executed with these criminals?

Elf Wizard: Teril – Accused of wizardry in a large wealthy kingdom (Koisinhelm) where magic is illegal. The King’s daughter (Forith) has disappeared and Teril was accused of it. Magic is illegal because of a magical disaster that occurred centuries ago, destroying half the city. It was caused by a High Elf (magical) Wizard who was Teril’s grandfather: Galothor.

Why is this method of execution generally considered a distaseful death?

Bound by melithian (known for it’s magic-quelling properties) cuffs, and being hacked to death by a dull melithian hatchet is a slow, painful death.

Who is it that has the authority to execute you?

Execution for magic use is demanded by the citizens. It’s a long standing tradition that even the king can’t alter, despite the fact that his daughter is missing. It would be a simple task for Teril to find her, even if he’s not guilty. The citizens would revolt if he attempted to change this law.

Who is that famous (or infamous) person bound along with you?

Human Nomad named Tildur

Why is that person here to be executed along with the rest of you?

Out of fear he may destroy the world. His power was granted to him by the Orb of Urofiviel which he discovered while travelling the roads. He inadvertently destroyed a small portion of the forest kingdom while tapping into it’s power.

What type of legendary beast or creature interrupted the executions?

A sun-like beam of light blinded everyone in it’s radius and when their vision cleared an Angelic Figure wearing Sleek Platinum armor warned of the evils awakened by the Orb’s explosion. As it was speaking a Melithian Golem smashed through several ancient trees into the execution area. A whisper from the Angelic Figure in a language unknown to all present evaporated the melithian that made up the cuffs, hatchet and Golem, it’s magic well beyond the ability of the melithian to quell.

What was foretold would happen when the Orb resurfaced after so many centuries?

Powerful creatures thought long extinct or banished will begin to reappear and threaten the entire world.

Who was it that freed you from your bonds?

The Angelic Figure (obviously lol)

What type of structure or area was nearby that you were lead to for safety?

The Angelic Figure guided them to the portion of the city ruined centuries ago before returning to destroy more of the creatures that made their way in.

Where can you go to learn more about the Prophecy?

The wielder of knowledge (the holder of the Orb) must seek the greedy and mischievous demonic Librarians on the Plane of Knowledge – Sunnivar

NOTES:

The King’s daughter Forith really disappeared along a road while secretly carrying the Orb of Urofiviel through the forest kingdom. This was the road where Tildur discovered it.

It was a lot of fun, and definitely unlike Skyrim (which I based all of the questions on)

Here are the Fronts I made for it afterwards. I can’t wait to play with this group again!

Interesting problem I detected: How would you handle these two things?

Interesting problem I detected: How would you handle these two things?

Interesting problem I detected: How would you handle these two things?

1) Sandboxy play: We had some group turnover recently (one of our members moved away; and we had a new member join this time as she just moved to the area): This was “session three” of a campaign, so there’s not been a ton of bond change:

– How would you handle the issue of a new player joining with new bonds, vs the older players with their bonds already set?

– How would you handle the issue of the bonds with the characters no longer attending the game, with new characters appearing in the game? (cross out the previous one, freeing it up for the new character, etc? Pull extra bonds out of supplements and books?)

2) We played for four hours and had a blast. Lots of drama, exploration, worldbuilding, politics, inter-character drama, high adventure and chases and action; …but there was no combat (just didn’t feel right given the players’ actions and decisions. I was thinking about shoe-horning one in the end, but it was really unnatural).

No problem, right? Well, the thing about Combat is that’s where the dice rolling goes from “maybe one roll per scene” to “many, many rolls in quick succession”, which leads to “high potential to fail a lot more” which leads to “more XP”.

In my situation, at the end of the session, since everyone was ON FIRE and just missed the opportunity for a bag of XP because I didn’t push a monster fight, I just told everyone to move up a level, flat out. It worked for the session, as a lot was accomplished, an “adventure” was complete and there was downtime int he end.

Still, was a tad unsatisfying. Any one else have other suggestions, or other alternative or supplemental XP award methods?

Thanks!

I’m working on a project concerning hirelings, so I’ve been throwing all kinds of hirelings towards my son in our 1-on-1 game. He had never used an Adept, because he was using hirelings to fill the roles his Wizard couldn’t. My adult players had never even used hirelings until I started my project, and when they finally did they didn’t use an Adept either because they didn’t have a spellcaster to take advantage of Arcane Assistance.

So in play-testing last night I had a Wizard and an Adept (plus a Druid and Fighter) in the party. An Adept has the Arcane Assistance move which aids spellcasting to give the spell’s effects greater range, duration or potency. The question that came up last night was “If Tendil (the Adept) aids Cedric (the Wizard) with an Invisibility spell can they make everyone invisible?”

Invisibility requires the Wizard to touch an ally to make that ally invisible (I had to look it up). So I told them “Sure, if everyone stands in a circle holding hands with the Wizard casting and the Adept aiding then they can all get Invisibility, but if one person loses it they all do because the magic is broken.”

So they did it (rolled a 7 and chose to forget the spell), sneaked past a BUNCH of Orcs, and Regnar (the Fighter) assassinated the Orc Warchief by decapitation.

ALL of that just to ask how you all have use an Adept to aid a Wizard in your games LOL! Also, do you think allowing the entire party to go invisible too powerful?
