Hi all, I’m migrating my site dmmuse.com to the cloud, and the links have changed for the Steading and Treasure generators. The new links are:

Any ideas for the next DW generator I should create? I’m thinking of a Perilous Wilds style “Region” generator.

Hello!

Hello!

Hello! I wanted to let you all know that Codex back issues are now available on DriveThruRPG. Previously, you could only get Codex through the Gauntlet Patreon, but a lot of people were asking for a DriveThru option, so here it is.

If you follow the Discern Realities podcast, you know that Codex has a ton of original Dungeon World stuff in it. The Volume One bundle includes 12 issues of the zine plus the 39-page Discern Realities Annual for a discounted price.

Check it out!

This week, on Dungeon World, our heroes entered the city of Daviston via the trade gate, and considered buying some daggers. “I can just make you some daggers”, said the Immolator, “if we only had some metal”…and that, your honour, is why they tried to rob the jewellery store, then mind-control and murder the shopkeep in an alley when that didn’t go to plan, and the whole time the party’s Cleric was out the front of the shop, proselytising to a huge crowd, completely unaware of the distraction he was enabling, or the crimes it was obscuring.

Ok, just started GMing Dungeon World for the first time.

Ok, just started GMing Dungeon World for the first time. It’s our groups first PbtA game and we’re all loving it. Now, I think I’m ready to introduce some custom moves based on what’s going on in the story. This is my first attempt and I’d love to get feedback on what might be improved (or what’s good and works as-is).

Bit of background: the PCs are in a village where a priest of a new religion has moved in and persuaded most of the poplace to help him rebuild a ruined temple for his new goddess (actually a ruse for an evil plot). Some of the followers are genuine willing believers, but many are in thrall to an evil sorcery advancing the priest’s real plans.

Heresy Against Karisatae

When you speak questionably about the Karisatite religion in front of a follower, roll + CHA.

On a 10+: The follower is not actively angered by your disbelief, but may try to convince you of your error.

On a 7-9: Choose 1.

On a 6-: All 3.

Choose:

The follower is deeply offended, take a -1 (cumulative) forward on all interactions with them.

The follower is struggling to reconcile your words with their faith. They seek guidance from the clergy (reporting your words to them) as soon as possible.

Gain +1 HERESY

__________________________

If you have 3+ HERESY:

Word of your heretical views has spread among the followers. They form a mob (with or without the clergy’s knowledge or approval) seeking to remove your influence from among them.

DOPPELGANGER, CARNIVAL

(Solitary, Devious, Intelligent)

Dagger (d4 damage) 10 HP, 0 Armor

Close

Special Qualities: Shape shifting

Their natural form, if you ever see it, is hideous. Like a creature who stopped growing part-way, before it decided it was elf or man or dwarf. These Doppelgangers wander the world as inhabitants of a carnival or circus, preying on the weak and gullible whenever they go; often in the employ of a stronger monster. They like to keep intelligent mimics as pets and servants.

Instinct: To infiltrate

• Assume distorted forms from a mirror maze

• Use another’s identity to advantage

• Consume the weak

DREAM EATER

(Solitary, Stealthy)

Bite (d10 damage) 16 HP, 0 armor

Close

Special Qualities: Incorporeal

A powerful psychic monster lurks among circus performers. In its natural form, it appears as a dense cloud of darkness with glints of tiny metal spikes and the sound of something smacking its teeth. With a manipulative and deceptive nature and resistance to mind-affecting magics, it is a challenging foe and can only be found in a corrupted Circus. It makes its lair in the Circus’ mirror maze and drives a town mad by preventing anyone from sleeping. Its sole drive is to sow confusion and to heighten the circus visitor’s fear, paranoia, and madness so it may safely consume a community’s restful sleep until everyone is dead. It has three powers: • Mimic: Appear as anyone who has gone through the Mirror Maze • Amplify: Amplify another’s emotional state so others can feel it. • Hallucinate: Cause someone’s hallucinations to manifest as illusions experienced by everyone. It may only be damaged by magic and magic weapons.

Instinct: Creates Madness

• Consumes Sleep

• Casts Illusions and Emotions

• Based on a monster in an Adventure Location by Stephanie Bryant “CAN’T SLEEP—CLOWNS WILL EAT ME”

INTELLIGENT MIMIC

(Solitary, Stealthy, Amorphous)

Bite (d10 damage) 12 HP 1 armor

Close

Special Qualities: Shape shifter, Take an enticing form

Mimics are natural predators, born by magical means that will eat just about anything that touches them. As shapeshifters, capable of perfectly replicating the appearance of wood, stone, and metal; Mimics commonly take on the form of stairs, door frames, chest, and many other shapes. These mutant mimics though are not only capable of greater intelligence, but even of tactics and speech. Intelligent mimics care only to feed themselves, but what the food is doesn’t matter to them, and smaller specimens will gladly let an adventurer go by unscratched in exchange for a bag of food. Such bribes can also be used to gain information or even guidance though a dungeon. (Based on a Dungeon World Tavern monster posted by Patrick Schenk).

Instinct: Satisfy Hunger

• Bargain information for food

• Take an enticing form

• Ensnare with tongue

Dream Eater’s Crown (Weight: 1)

The wearer can project powerful illusions for a short period of time, but doing so takes a mental toll. Every time the Crown is used the wearer must Roll+INT. On a 10+ the Illusion succeeds, on a 7-9 the illusion succeeds but the wearer must make camp before the item can be use again, on a fail the illusion is obviously an illusion and will only fool the foolish and gullible (Think of it as very bad CGI).

Fossegrimen is a lonely creature, but an expert fiddler. If you bring him a worthy sacrifice, preferably a a white he-goat thrown with head turned away into a waterfall that flows northwards or a lucious fenalår (smoked mutton), he’ll teach you how to play a tune so sweet that tables and benches, cup and can, gray-beards and grandmothers, blind and lame, even babes in the cradle will begin to dance.

Rambling about Rangers.

Rambling about Rangers.

Rambling about Rangers.

On a recent DW, Jason Cordova mentioned that a player had gotten into the Ranger playbook but wasn’t all that interested in the animal companion move. Which, of course, was a warning trigger because that’s a pretty defining piece of the Ranger. The animal companion has bugged me for a long time.

For one thing, that animal companion comes from a pretty clear source – Drizzt. Right? I mean Aragorn didn’t have a Guenhwyvar analogue. And those are probably the two most quintessential rangers in all of fiction. If you can think of others, name then and say “yes” or “no” to whether they had an animal friend that was integral to their story.

For another, I feel like the Ranger isn’t “shooty” enough. I’d like to see more arrow tricks. I’ve seen an alt Ranger book that takes more of this “huntsman” approach, which is cool.

What I would like to see is a replacement move based on channeling one’s self through an animal (the way it works in Assassin’s Apprentice or Game of Thrones). But I would actually probably use it to replace the Druid’s shapeshifter move, and then replace the ranger’s animal move with something related to hunting and shooting and foraging. To give the Druid back some power (because the shapeshifter move is powerful!), maybe advanced versions of the move let you stay in the animal longer or give you animalistic traits (senses, strength, grace) based on your favored animal.

Anyway…

Finally have the group look back at the game session just concluded. For each YES everyone earns 1XP.

– Can you recount one memorable moment for each character?

– Is the world different because of your latest actions?

I need help figuring out a 3rd thing to guide Protagonists’ behavior 🙂

I have an idea for a campaign, but I am a new DM and I wanted some thoughts form others.

I have an idea for a campaign, but I am a new DM and I wanted some thoughts form others. The idea is that a world has been mostly taken over by creatures/monsters, and has reached out to other worlds for help. The only remaining kingdom has offered payment to adventurers to go into the infested area and look for anything of value (magic items, gems, ores, information on enemies, etc.) I have ideas for jobs for the PCs to do, along with a possible reason to why the area is infested, but I would like to know what others think of the idea.
