The Dungeon Map

A blank piece of old parchment, rolled up and bound with simple string. These maps adapt to whichever ruin they are first opened in. Upon unrolling, thin lines of ink appear, giving the size and shape of every room in the dungeon, but none of the details.

The Compass

A simple blue compass with a red needle that does not point north. When you use a compass for the first time in a new dungeon, roll+Wis. On a 10+, choose 2. On a 7-9, choose 1. The GM will mark them on your map (it need not be the Dungeon Map).

-the location of the most dangerous monster

-the location of a notable treasure

-the location of an important key

I have an idea for a magic staff for the evil cleric in my game, thought I’d see what everyone here thinks of it.

The Staff of Ktula

An abysmally black obsidian staff, adorned with jagged runes. At the top sits a tiny, pitiful skull — it conjures images in your head of empty cradles and weeping mothers.

The power of this staff can only be evoked by one who can commune with Ktula. It is only a mundane, but grotesque, staff to others. When you use the staff to call on Ktula to create an effect of sadistic intent, roll+Wis. On a 10+, the GM chooses one. On a 7-9, the GM chooses two.

-You lose favour with Ktula; the Staff is useless until you commune with him again

-Ktula applies the effect to you as well

-You draw the attention of the Lord of Light

I’ve been having a discussion with one of my players concerning the speed at which the PCs level up (among other things concerning XP). He thinks that at the rate it goes as written in the rules is too fast to get a proper appreciation for the class. Specifically, he’s concerned that moves taken at levels 9 or 10 won’t get much use before a character has to retire or change classes. Unfortunately, we’re all still new to this game, so this is a sort of theoretical conversation for us — nobody’s actually hit level 10 yet (though I will admit this PC got to 7 really quick).

I understand his concern. He’s coming from more of a DnD background and is used to a longer investment in the characters. When you reach the max level so quickly its feels like the character’s story is finished before it’s supposed to. But I believe that having too slow of a progression leads to stagnation in character growth, something that DW works very hard to resist. Change is an important part of the game.

At this point I suggested we just keep playing the rules as written and see how it works for us, but I’m curious what everyone here thinks. Do the PCs grow too quickly or just right? Has anybody tried any alternatives to the “your level+7” rule? Did it work?

I have a player who wants to start gathering a lot of hirelings together and eventually create his own army to raid, pillage, and other nasty things.  I told him the best bet would probably be a Compendium Class, so I started to draw one up in preparation of the eventual day he has enough followers for it. This is the Warlord. What does everyone think? Comments and critique?

I need an opinion on the semantics of the Shapeshift move for the Druid.

I need an opinion on the semantics of the Shapeshift move for the Druid. I had a PC with the domain Depths of the Earth who wanted to turn into a magma golem. I originally declined, saying just animals are allowed, but he argued that the wording of “you may take on the physical form of any species” implies more than just regular animals. Since we were opposed, I allowed it for that session and told him I’ll find a definitive answer.

So, tavern-goers, what do you think?

I had an idea for a Chosen One Compendium Class, one who is mentioned in prophesy in some major way. So far I’ve only thought of a couple of moves. Anybody else have any ideas?

The Chosen One

When you are revealed to be the one spoken of in a prophesy and accept that knowledge, you must take this move:

Prophetic Fame

When you enter a settlement, roll+Cha. On a 10+, somebody in town will recognize you as the one from prophecy.  On a 7-9, somebody dangerous will recognize you.

After that, you may take these advanced moves in addition to your class moves when you gain a level.

Tipping the Scales

Fate has her eye on you, and wants nothing more than to fulfill your prophesy. When you take an action which has a direct connection to the prophesy of you, you do not fail on a 6-. Instead, you count it the same as you would a 7-9 result.

Divine Insight

When Discerning Realities, you may also ask the GM “In what way is this important to the prophecy?”

Fate’s Strings

When you take your Last Breath, you are taken to the realm of Fate rather than Death. (I don’t know what to do here at all, but it just seemed to fit that this event would happen for a Chosen One. What would Fate do, though?)

Let me know what you think and share any ideas you have!
