A question to everyone who self-publishes DW content on DrivethruRPG: Is it a viable source of income, or more like enough to buy a coffee every month? Does DTRPG require art in works to be sold? (I have a BS in fine art painting, but I’m total BS at illustration)

Hey folks of the Tavern, I wanted to let you know that the Running GAGG gaming convention in Beautiful Geneseo NY (near Rochester) is coming soon (January 30- February 1, 2015). I’ll be there I’ve already signed up to run two sessions of Dungeon World, a session of DCC and a 4 hour timeslot worth of potpourri (any indie games I have with me that the players vote to play). If you live in Western NY and you’ve never been, Running GAGG is one of the best conventions you could go to (If GenCon is the best four days in gaming, Running GAGG should be called the best three days in gaming). Event list below, click the home link to see the con information.

So, I’m kind of obsessed with mashing together Dungeon World and Fate (accelerated). But the best I’ve come up with so far is adding 2 or three aspects onto a regular DW character and having aspects add +1 or +2 to appropriate rolls. 1 aspect is a high concept (on top of the character’s class) and the other two replace bonds but are more generally applicable, ie: not just aid rolls. Though as an aside, making negative aspects ie: nearsighted and having them grant penalties is somewhat appealing, but what is the player motivation for expressing their negative aspects (auto xp even without failure? fate points?) and does that wreck Dungeon World’s general PC awesomeness? What about fate points and XP? or advancement? Would aspects and other trappings of Fate even improve DW or would it just be more stats (and thus more sources of mechanical bonuses)? I haven’t tested any of this in play and it’s somewhat clunky still, has anyone else experimented in this vein yet?

Hey Dungeon Worlders, are there any audio podcasts that cover Dungeon World (and other Powered by the Apocalypse games) exclusively? I’m not looking for actual play podcasts, more like, news, reviews, interviews, theorycrafting, advice, etc. Kinda like Spellburn for DW or Know Direction but for DW.

When a Wizard or Cleric casts a spell, they don’t lose it on a 10+, can choose to lose it on a 7-9, what happens on a 6-? Obviously it’s an opportunity for the GM to make a move, but should the spell be lost as well? If not, would forcing the spell to be lost be a valid move for the GM to make?

A few weeks ago I purchased the the elf, dwarf & halfling classes by funhaver on drivethru. I love the old school feel of the latter two but their Elf, while being a fighting magic user is not my cup of tea. It seems as though they tried to make a class that emulates the B/X or BECMI elf, yet they left out the vancian magic, thus making it less old school. Feeling inspired I’m beginning my own Elf class more directly based on the BECMI Elf, but before I go and reinvent the wheel, has anyone already written a class like this (essentially a fighter-wizard)? Admittedly, I can get that effect by playing an elven fighter and using the multi class dabbler move at level two to take the wizard’s spellcasting move, I’m just looking for something a bit different.

Comment I got after a game I ran on Saturday:

“At first I wasn’t sure I wanted to learn a new RPG, that’s why I was hesitant to join at first. But within two ’rounds’ of combat I understood the rules”

Another player joined two minutes before I started so I didn’t have time to explain the moves as thoroughly as I had for the other players. I turned to him first to see what he wanted to do in response to the action I’d set in motion. He was caught by analysis paralysis so I moved to another player and came back to him. By the end of the game I could tell he “got it” too, completely into the game without the analysis paralysis new players of other games usually still have at the end of their first session. The third player at the table immediately got the rules too like the first guy.

Sadly, I had one player hung up on the D&D way of things, the whole session he was rolling unasked for int checks to see how his character reacted instead of just roleplaying it (I had to repeatedly tell him to forget what he “knew” of paladins from other games, that DW is different). I haven’t had this issue come up in private games with my friends. When initially explaining the game I usually stress the things that are the same between DW and D&D and then drill down into the differences and that so far has worked for getting new players into the game. Sometimes I’ll describe DW as like D&D but more roleplay-y and less mindless killing-y.

Does anyone have any suggestions for teaching a new to DW player? I could tell this guy had had fun but I don’t think he’ll be craving to play again the way I was after my first session. Most people I’ve taught the game to are pretty excited to play again either with me or on their own too.

It looks like I may be running Dungeon World at a store on a regular basis as the game I ran on Saturday for freerpgday went really well. Adam Koebel do you have any plans for an organized play program? If the store is willing to print sheets for me is it allright if I give them the basic moves/character sheet pdf? What distributors carry DW so I can tell the store how to get it? Johnstone Metzger I use Truncheon World extensively while running DW is it available in distribution or only as a print on demand or pdf from drivethrurpg, ie: is there a way for a brick n mortar store to sell it?
