Session Zero Issue 5: The Frost Giant’s Gambit is now available for $2.99 on DriveThruRPG (MUCH sooner than I expected… the last issue took 8 days to go live, and this one only took 1!)

CROWDSOURCING…

The antagonist in issue 6 of my Session Zero zine will have three moves based on certain aspects: Title, Clan and a Staff. The Staff will always be the same (The Staff of Souls), but The Title and Clan come from a card draw from a regular deck of cards.

Each card rank gives a different title, which gives the antagonist a specific artifact that comes with a move. Likewise each suit gives a different Clan name which tells what “eternal form” the antagonist has, and dictates another move.

Example: Kind of Diamonds = Kazlan Dirr, who is a Lich wearing the Crown of Command (and wielding the Staff of Souls).

Kazlan Dirr

HP, Armor, etc.

Lich description

Instinct: X

(which requires the Staff)

I have the four clans and the staff, and two of the artifacts (“Crown of Command” and “Tiara of Teleportation”) but need help with the other 11 artifacts. They need not be alliterations, but need to be concise enough that you can easily understand their move just by their name.

Thanks in advance. If I use your suggestion in the zine I’ll include your name with it!

Here’s a PWYW product based on a couple of articles I wrote for GnomeStew last year. It’s a method I use to create adventures, and was used to create the adventures seen in issues 4 and 5 of my Dungeon World zine The Destroyer of Ages (available now on DTRPG) and The Frost Giant’s Gambit (available at the end of this month).

It may not be for everyone, but it has really helped me simplify the process of designing adventures.

Organization Tag Solitary: “It lives and fights alone”

Organization Tag Solitary: “It lives and fights alone”

Organization Tag Group: “Usually seen in small numbers, 3-6 or so”

Does anyone use a tag that means something like “Appears singly in mixed groups”?

I’m think specifically something like Leader or Individual. There will only be one of them, but they’ll appear in a group of other monsters. Not necessarily as an NPC, but more special, like a lieutenant or sergeant: A group of soldiers lead by a sergeant.

Here’s an item that will appear in the next issue of Session Zero.

Veritas precise, close, reach, 1 weight

Veritas is a whip that once belonged to the hero of a long gone civilization. The word veritas translated to “truth” in a language ancient even to him, making Veritas literally “The Whip of Truth”. When wielded by expert hands it can compel those it restrains to answer a question truthfully.

When using Veritas to Hack and Slash you gain an additional option on 10+: Deal no damage and restrain your opponent. Ask the GM one question directed at that opponent, which must be answered truthfully.

I made this creature using the Mutant and Monstrosity Generator from Logan Howard’s latest Sword Breaker zine: The Folded Lands. Although this is very tongue-in-cheek, I’ve used the generator to make a few really cool, very usable creatures!

The Hunter Solitary

8 HP, 0 Armor – Kick (1d10 damage, Forceful, Close)

Special Quality: Natural Camouflage

The Hunter is a large spell-casting, nearly invisible turkey that preys upon humans one day out of every year. The Hunter will blend into its environment with a natural camouflage and wait until just the right moment to attack with fire spells to debilitate its prey, then move in for the kill with a swift kick. After eating some of the victim it will then cast a freezing spell to save the meat, eating the leftovers of several kills throughout the rest of the year.

Instinct: To wait patiently for prey

Leap out of harm’s way

Blend into the background

Cast elemental spells

I’ve seen posts recently about Monks, and I wondered if it was possible to just use fiction to play a Monk using the Fighter playbook. Here’s a Monk I made (through Level 10) that just renames the Fighter’s moves to more Monk-appropriate names. Thoughts?
