A friend asked me to make a couple adventure fronts for a “Legend of Zelda game, but I don’t want it to be EXACTLY Legend of Zelda” campaign he’s starting this weekend. I told him I could, but it’s more fun (and the players will have more investment) if they grow organically. So I sent him this, using a modified “Adventure Builder” by John Lewis…

We are heading to a dungeon on a small island

which lies in a kingdom told of in legend,

seeking the first of eight pieces of a powerful artifact

in order to defeat a tyrant and rescue his royal prisoner.

Start with these, then extrapolate outward…

What is the kingdom’s name, and what legends are told of it?

Where in the kingdom is the island, and how will you get there?

What is the artifact, and why is it in 8 pieces?

Who is the tyrant, and how will the artifact help defeat him?

Who is the royal prisoner, and how did you learn of his/her imprisonment?

I asked him to record the Q&A for me, so when he gets it to me I’ll post it here as a follow up.

I started a solo game with one of my best friends last night. One who had NEVER played an RPG of any kind! She was super excited after our session zero and can’t wait to play (maybe even today). Here a link to the questions and answers.

The adventure seed came from a slightly modified “Adventure Builder” by John Lewis (basically I just took the last two parts out and ran the first 4 together).

Here’s the map I made as we went along, and then the Inkarnate version I made later. The hex grid came late in the process by accident, and for some reason I can’t take it off. I hadn’t saved in a while so it was easier to leave it on than redoing 45 minutes of work after my last save LOL.

A player in a game starting tomorrow night just texted me asking if he can play a blind ranger who sees through his animal companion’s eyes.

I haven’t responded yet, but I THINK I’m going to say yes. I’ll give him Eyes of the Tiger from the Druid’s playbook: When you mark an animal (with mud, dirt, or blood) you can see through the animal’s eyes as if they were your own, no matter what distance separates you. Only one animal at a time may be marked in this way.

I like this better than just saying “Yeah, you see through your animal’s eyes” because it gives me an easy way to take his sight away with something that washes away the mark (like rain or being submerged).

I’m kind of looking forward to asking how he was blinded and how he developed this ability!

Session Zero 6 – The Eternal is now available on DriveThruRPG

A civilization that had torn itself out of time to avoid annihilation at the hands of The Destroyer of Ages has now appeared in our own age, deep below a modern dwarven village. Strange things are happening in the village above as souls that have been trapped for millennia are taking over the bodies of the living dwarves. Only the caretaker of the ancient civilization – The Eternal – knows that the dwarves of this age are the descendants of a clan of traitors that escaped the Soul Matrix long ago.

My home group and I are trying three different things for our next campaign starting tomorrow night (5 or 6 sessions). I’ll report back on all of them after they’ve played it a while:

1) Getting rid of the Ability Scores: There was some chatter quite a while ago about getting rid of ability scores and just using the mods like AW, and I’ve been thinking about it ever since. What we’re going to try is when they level up they get to choose to either take a new move OR increase one of your mods.

2) Replacing alignment AND bonds with Traits: I’m taking the Trait list straight out of Freebooters on the Frontier (page 9). They can roll or choose 2 traits. Then at end of session they check if they’ve role played both of their traits (instead of alignment) for XP, and if they caused any ally to role play one or both of their own traits (like flags) for another XP. We’ve been playing Aid or Interfere as fictional description giving +1 or -2 for a long time now, so we don’t really use bonds anymore. We lose a little of the initial fiction associated with bonds, but I think I’ll use a “_Character 1_, tell us about that time Character 2 was Trait” format to make up for that.

3) Randomizing initial Stat mods: One of my players decided she wanted to randomize her stat mods after choosing her playbook. Then the other two players wanted to try it too. I made six cards (-1, 0,0,+1, +1, +2) and they’ll shuffle them and deal them out left to right. It may be interesting.

We’ll see how it goes. All three players are on board with these modifications. I want to give them a good try instead of just hypothesising about them lol.

Here is my take on spell casting in the Dark Sun setting.

Here is my take on spell casting in the Dark Sun setting. I’ll be play testing it with some other Dark Sun material with my home group tomorrow night. Any and all feedback between now and then would be appreciated.

It uses the standard “Cast a spell” entry from the rulebook (page 144) and only adds in the two casting modes. I went this way because I don’t think it’s necessary to spell out setting-specific consequences in the move (except for defiling and preserving) because if we’re doing what we’re supposed to with DW, all of that will come from the setting and fiction anyway. THE thing that makes magic different in Dark Sun is defiling (and less powerful but friendlier preserving) IMO.

Notes:

He’s playing a Human Wizard and took Animate Dead as his Cleric Spell.

I have already discussed the trigger and Practiced Animation with him.
