I’d go with “sure, if the author or GM think its cool & helps.” Maps can communicate a lot of things very quickly & little details can inspire, but they’re certainly not necessary all the time.
The answer is: whatever works for you and your group.
A set of dungeon tiles, that players or the GM use to build the environment in play, might be better than a pre-drawn map.

For a while, our world map was names and simple drawings on index cards. Then we upgraded to a voroni map with some regions, roads, coastline. For dungeons, I like to map it out for myself beforehand, as this helps me keep my bearings and describe what they see so they can draw their own map as they explore. I feel all of this fits into the “draw maps, leave blanks” guidance.
They need to have areas and connections between. Actual maps – optional.
