Hi Guys a new player in my DW game has chosen the Blade Dancer, I am new to DW and was hoping someone could halp be decipher this move

“Seek Weakness

When you intently study an opponent, roll+INT. On a 10+, you recognize a weak point you can exploit; the GM will tell you what.

On a 7-9, the GM will offer you two options

between suspicion, danger, or cost.

I am fine with the fiction around 10+ but I am really unsure what it measn I should be offering with 7-9

Suspicion?

Danger?

Cost?

am i supposed to offer him 1 of 2 of the 3 choices? does he choose 2 of the 3 choices

and also what am I suposed to say to him about those choices?

In a sample situation say “You are standing in front of a Large Skeletal Creature that is slowly moving towards you – What do you do? and the Blade Dancers response is “Can I back away and slowly flank the creature looking for any weaknesses” at this point he rolls his dice and gets an 8.

At this point how would I handle the fiction?

Any help as always is appreciated guys 🙂

  1. In this case I, as GM, would choose danger and cost. This seems like a combat situation, so suspicion doesn’t make much sense to me.

Now that I’ve made my choice, I’d say something like “You notice the neck joint right below the skull is weak. Unfortunately those skull spikes will make it difficult to get to.” (That’s the danger.) “Of course you could probably throw your sword at the joint, though you might lost your weapon for a while.” (That’s the cost.)

  2. Great ideas, so If the enemy was say a Gargoyle I could say something like

Danger: there is a crack in the creatures skin just below the left wing and  hitting it could break the creatures wings and stop it flying but you would need to get in very close and possibly get buffeted by its wings. also to open the crack up further you would need to prize a metal object into the gap and this would most probably blunt the object reducing its damage capability?

  3. You don’t necessarily need to link the two options. In fact, you probably shouldn’t (so my initial example wasn’t all that great). It should be a “If you do A, then X will probably happen. But if you do B, then Y will probably happen.”

Based on the current situation, you the GM decide which two things are probable consequences; suspicion, danger, or cost. You then tell the player these two probable outcomes, then let them choose which one they take.

If you choose suspicion, then someone or something assumes the Blade Dancer is up to something fishy, and acts accordingly. If you choose danger, then the goal the Blade Danger wants to achieve will require putting themselves or someone else into danger. If you choose cost, then the goal the Blade Danger wants to achieve will require then using up a resource.

Try not to make the choices too easy. Meaning don’t make one course of action obviously less painful than the other. Make them both hurt. >:)

  4. Nice one thanks Christopher I see what you mean maybe there needs to be another player performing a distration that puts them in danger to allow the Blade Dancer to Expose the Weakness or If the Blade Dancer wants to lunge at the Crack in the Gargoyles Stone Skin they would damage loose the weapon they used to deliver the attack.

  5. Sorry if I’m in the wrong place to ask this guys but I’m new to the community and the game, and was wondering where I might find all these alternate classes? I’ve only got the core book with the standard races and classes.

  6. Scott McCafferty There are a quite a few floating around on the internet for free, the majority of them right here, if you’re willing to print out a class with the wrong font or a few rough edges.

Otherwise head to RPGDrivethru and search for Dungeon World. I hear the Witch is a good one.

Alternate races are just a case of making up a new starting racial bit and sticking it over one of the option on a character sheet. I made a bunch of racial options, they’re around here somewhere.
