Drazhu was up to his multidimensional antics again today, to introduce a mage and a rogue to #DungeonWorld. We had one hour with three hirelings from The Book of Hirelings and got as far as the Whipmaster’s door. Full transcript to follow after close of business.

  1. I modified the hirelings to ignore the Order Hirelings move whilst captive, as their desire for freedom turns their loyalty into HP, doing all they can to protect the heroes who will lead them to liberty.

So I tell the mage and the ranger that they were recently captured, that their gear has been confiscated, and that the ranger’s wolf was most recently seen in a cage, being dragged off to the killing pit. Their friends in bondage include the (late) crazy dwarf who provided the map (which I drew in a hurry, hence no grid, which was scary but FINE!), an overworked doctor, a tormented warrior, and a little urchin. The earthquake cracked an anti-magic ward on the wall and I let the players decide which gate falls open. They chose the one behind the goblin, leading to the pit, and it’s on.

They quickly grabbed their friends, armed themselves with mining gear and rush the startled goblin before he could raise the alarm. The ranger swung the drag bucket and the rope broke. The bucket flew over the goblin’s head and smashed the warrior’s nose. The mage ran up to kick the goblin between the legs and ends up with his leg stuck in a fresh crack in the floor. The ranger then knocked the goblin unconscious, looted his knife, and the whole group rushed toward the killing pit.

There was a makeshift crane dangling the wolf’s cage over the spider’s lair, and the ranger was so eager to rescue his pet that he didn’t notice the slippery edge. Soon, they both dangled over the pit, and the crane began to lean beneath the weight, but the warrior held it down while the mage saved the ranger. The spider moved ever closer, and the wolf made it to safety (and freedom), followed by the spider, then the battle intensified, wounding the mage, who was dragged to safety for the doctor to suture with hair and a needle improvised from a fingernail.

The mage threw the dagger into the spider’s spinnerettes, drawing it down the cavern. The ranger flanked it and distracted it again, and when it turned, the mage grabbed the dagger and tore it a new one, the blood running into his recent wound.

They then all raced to the other gate and used the tunnel hammer to drive the mining pick into the lock, under the cover of earthquake noise. The urchin tried to distract the whipmaster while the ranger dashed past to the doorway, but the whipmaster brought his weapon down, hard. Tune in next week!

  2. Awesome AP Matt! How good is the SLave pits of Drazhu? Jason is one switched on designer.

I love your map (without grids!) way cool! I can’t wait for Doug Anderson ‘s new tileset so I can have a crack at making the Slave pit Layout 🙂

  3. I just can’t quit Drazhu. I’ve decided his ritual makes him permeate every RPG table in the multiverse, it’s always an aspect of the same Drazhu, but different heroes and different outcomes.

    WE ARE ALL FIGHTING DRAZHU.

    FOREVER.

  4. That is a awesome idea!

Maybe the whole slave pit adventurers thing is part the ritual? Dun dun dun!

Also: the cards for items and junk is something we need more of. I might make some later, come to think of it…
