I am seriously considering hacking Dungeon World for play in the Earthdawn setting. Does anyone know of any attempts to do this already?

  1. Earthdawn is a fantastic setting, which is essentially fantasy post-apocalypse (at least in the rev I had).   The “horrors” were some of my favorite nasties in any setting.

  2. I think it wouldn’t be super hard.  You could probably use many of the playbooks as is, changing a few names and just calling them Disciplines.   Magicians and Thread Magic would require more work.

  3. Earthdawn was an amazing game.  If you are going to make a hack of DW for ED then you are going to need to do two important things.

    1. You MUST address the weapon and history aspect of the game in the basic moves.  (It’ll be a lot of work and tweaking to get that right.)

    2. The playbooks you come up with should reflect the use of magic in the world of ED.  (They can have a lot of the same moves as similar playbooks in DW as well.)

It sounds like a fun project. Good luck!

  4. Brian Poe: the weapon history unlock/growth thing is one of the best things about Earthdawn, and one I port to every fantasy game I’ve run since, so will definitely be there.

The playbooks will also be ditching Vancian magic and embracing the slower, less certain casting in Earthdawn (and the notions of casting using a matrix vs. from grimoire vs. raw magic vs. blood magic). They will also follow the “everyone uses magic” premise for the non-casting disciplines as well.

I’m going to be doing all of this making use of “threads” in a way that isn’t exactly like Earthdawn, but is a) simpler, b) feels somewhat the same and c) changes how Dungeon World leveling works a little.

So… I’ll probably wind up pissing off both Dungeon World and Earthdawn afficianados, but I think it will work OK.

  5. All great thoughts!  There are a lot of custom playbooks to mine for ideas.  I had fun for a bit with AsteriskWorld – I would highly suggest checking it out for a radically different way of reorganizing DW mechanics.

  6. Lester Ward don’t worry about DW or ED aficionados.  Those guys will keep playin’ DW or ED and it’s their loss!  Good luck man!
