I would need some help with creating a custom move for a PC who is more of a talker than a fighter.

I would need some help with creating a custom move for a PC who is more of a talker than a fighter.

I would like the move to read as as follows: “When the situation is about to get out of hand, roll 2D6+CHA. 10+: choose 3. 7-9: choose 1”

What should the list of option be?

Ideally I would like 4 so that even if you roll 10+ you still have to make an interesting choice.

Any suggestion?

  1. Before we get to results, your trigger is missing something.  Right now, it will trigger whenever the situation is about to get out of hand, regardless of what the fighter does.

I think you want something like When you try to smooth things over before the situation gets out of hand, roll +Cha

As far as choices… what do you see the possible outcomes of this being? (Not worrying about final wording… just spit ball your ideas.)

  2. SPEAK CALMLY AND CARRY A HUGE HEART

When you want to disarm a charged situation, start speaking or singing and roll+CHA. On a 10+ no one present can commit violence against anyone while they can see you or hear your voice. On a 7-9, it’s the same but they still can act against you personally.

  3. Good point. What I am trying to get to is the move equivalent of “Wait!… Let me say one last thing!!” as everyone starts drawing weapons in the room.

I like Tim Franzke’s trigger. It is better than mine but I would prefer a move with multiple choices.

  4. What about something like:

SPEAK CALMLY AND CARRY A HUGE HEART

When you want to disarm a charged situation, start speaking or singing and roll+CHA. On a 10+  choose 3. On a 7-9 choose 1:

    – You get to say one last sentence.

    – You do not attract unwanted attention to yourself

    – You get out of harms way

    – You get to ready yourself for what is coming.

  5. Is the intent to let the fighter actually defuse the situation and prevent violence from breaking out?  Or is the intent to let the fighter stall for time and let him or his allies prepare and position themselves for the inevitable?

  6. * Fighting stops long enough for you to Parley.

    * You don’t have to put yourself in harm’s way.

    * You don’t have to sacrifice an appropriate resource (such as coin or magic).

    * None of your enemies take advantage of the distraction to get in one more attack on your allies.

  7. The intent is for the fighter to defuse the situation if he finds a convincing argument. I want to return to the fiction, so the player need to find something smart (which is part of the fiction) to say  in order to avoid violence.

  8. Julien Tabulazero, I think a hold + spend approach would work better for your goal than a “pick X of 4” mechanic.  I wrote something similar up a while back… let me see if I can find it.

  9. What I want to avoid is a move that let you skip a fight simply because you rolled high. There need to be a specific action from your character. I think the fiction will be more interesting/engaging that way.

  10. My understanding of Parley is that it requires leverage.

You need a bargaining chip in order for it to trigger.

For example, if you were to take someone from the opposing party hostage (a knife to his/her throat) then you could Parley.

Here what I am trying to get is the measly bard/wizard/cleric calming the testosterone fuelled warrior types in the room with a cool and collected argument (that the character has to provide).

  11. Keep ‘Em Talking

When you make yourself the center of attention to defuse the situation, roll +Cha.   On a 7-9, hold 1. On a 10+, hold 3. You lose your hold if you stop talking or otherwise holding everyone’s attention. Spend your hold 1 for 1 to:

    – Reposition yourself without anyone objecting

    – Give your allies a chance to act (subtly) without drawing noitce

    – Ask a question from the Discern Realities list
