(I had a brief flash of inspiration at work, and posted this move on twitter. People there seemed to like it, so I thought I’d share it over here!)
BLUE MAGIC: When a monster move is used on you, roll +INT. On a 10+, you may add that move to your memorized spells: cast it using “Cast A Spell” as normal. On a 7-9, as a 10+, but the monster’s instinct replaces your current alignment move until you’ve ‘forgotten’ that move one way or another.
Love it!
Nifty, I like it.
Ben Wray Is it supposed to be forgotten for good if you choose to forget this new “spell”?
Yeah. The monster moves aren’t in your spellbook, so you can’t get them when you Prepare Spells like normal. At least until a monster uses it on you again! Which kind of makes up for the fact that in theory you could gain OMGMONSTERABILITIES.
Gorgeous, Ben. I love it. If you want to unshackle from the Cast a Spell model, try this;
BLUE MAGIC: When a monster uses a move on you, roll +INT. On a 10+, you may add that move to your character and use it whenever you like. On a 7-9, as a 10+, but the monster’s instinct replaces your current alignment move as long as you have it. While you list a monster move, you cannot use Blue Magic. You may shed the monster move (and their instict) whenever you like.
Thanks! I was definitely thinking an advancement for wizards, but I could see breaking it up into “gaining monster moves” and “using monster moves” type thing. One of my first thoughts for Blue Magic was actually “Roll +int, -number of monster moves you currently have prepared” but thought that might be a bit busy.
I’d write a whole class around this action. The Blue Mage.
Like some kind of fucked-up megadruid.
The Mutant in “Adventures on Dungeon Planet” is kind of Blue Mage-y, too.
Right? A Druid, Mutant, and Blue Mage walk into a gazebo.
Ben Wray …but what moves does a Gazebo have? :p
I’m blatantly stealing it for Animal style move to be included into my Battlemind’s repertoire. Thank you very much, Ben Wray and Adam Koebel
P.S. FF5 and FFT rock hard.
Jarrah James Devour and digest anyone who tries to kill it with fire or waste it with a crossbow. For starters.

instinct: to mislead
I’m inclined to say: The Gazebo doesn’t move.
“Never speak the name of your move”
How can I tell what move DM used?
You’re not supposed to be able to tell.
“When a monster move is used on you”
How can I tell when I must use this move?
What move dm apply?
“Make a show of power” or “Show signs of an approaching threat”?
“Turn metal to rust” or “Use up their resources”?
The GM would have to offer you the move.
Right right, what Adam said. When you trigger a move, it’s partially up to the GM to say “Hey, roll for (move),” right? So, when a monster uses a move on you, the GM will say “Hey, roll for Blue Magic, the hag just told you a misleading prophecy or ugly truth.”
I do not see a move in the base DW that would require this kind of attention from the DM.
DM has so many problems. He does most of the work. It’s strange to create a move that increases its volume.
P.S.: If you do not understand, blame Google Translate.
