Hey guys, I’m running a PbP game of DW and I’ve got an awesome Paladin that is going to be playing in it. This is the first Paladin I’ve had in a game (lets be honest, this is only the second game I’ve ran) and so it’s the first time I’ve deeply looked at the class. I have a few questions:

One of the boons listed is ‘A mark of divine authority’. Can someone give me an idea of what this is, and how it might be useful? I can imagine that anyone who saw it would realize that you’ve been marked by the gods and so should respect/fear/idolize/possibly hate you and that could play out in so many ways.

The other question is about “I am the Law” – it mentions divine authority, but does that mean it needs the Mark listed above, or are they two separate things?

Thanks in advance!

  1. I believe that they are two separate things. For your first question, I used the mark of divine authority to assault some demons in a game I played. They had taken out our lights, but my symbol shone clear.

  2. For sure ask the player what their mark is, they might come up with a surprising answer. I see it as a police badge, but I guess it could be a halo of light, or glowing cat eyes depending on the god. For the GM, it’s something to ask about. Where did you get the mark, does it change when you summon divine power or exert the Law, you wake up without your mark; what do you do?

  3. Yeah, it doesn’t seem right that you’d have to take one boon to get the use of one of the class moves, and so that’s how I plan to play it.

As far as the mark, I think it’s a pretty cool one – the player described it as:

The Red Sign glows on Grimdall’s forehead when he invokes it.

I think it makes sense when it’d come into play in the fiction, so I’m sure he & I will find ways to make it work 🙂 Thanks guys!

  4. I love playing a Paladin. The mark of divine authority is exactly what it says on the tin. It’s something that makes your divine authority apparent to any who view it. Ask the player what it is and how it shows their authority.

No, you do not need a mark of your divine authority to use the I Am the Law move. Although, if you have one, it probably would be a good time to show it 🙂
