Weird Monster Moves

If you’re playing in a genre where the monsters are really weird, replace a few of their moves with some of these or add 1-2 to their existing moves. In genres where the monsters are weird rather than violent (Inverse World, World of Ooo), replace their more violent moves. You should also give the altered monsters new names, probably.

1. Deploys its sadness aura

2. Turns itself inside-out

3. Is really a different monster in a costume

4. Gets really stretchy

5. Invites you over for something (tea, meal, boardgames)

6. Swallows you

7. Inflates like a balloon

8. Opens its mouth really, really wide

9. Jumps into a shadow

10. Turns out to be someone you know, transformed

11. Grows really big or really small

12. Has blood made of something delicious (jelly, ice cream)

13. Sprouts extra body parts (limbs, eyes)

14. Apologizes profusely

15. Falls in bromance with you

16. Starts singing

17. Starts dancing

18. Divides into multiples of itself

19. Resurrects itself from being dead

20. Bounces off of things

21. Tells you about the oath it swore

22. Eats all the food in sight

23. Brags about something it did

24. Knows the person you’re talking about very well

25. Plays a musical instrument

26. Dissolves into a puddle

27. Is the very last of its kind

28. Becomes two-dimensional

29. Reveals its obsession for a certain common substance (cake, watches)

30. Asks you a riddle

Etc.

  1. Ask Michael Wight about it. Obviously it’s unlicensed fan material at this point, and I’m not sure how finished Michael thinks it is.

  2. Hell yes I love monster moves that challenge PC’s in new and unusual ways. They can change the fiction in really interesting and imaginative ways, and get your players (and yourself) thinking creatively.

  3. Here’s a goofy non combat sad monster I made while thinking of fun children’s story creatures, and asking fantasy tropes in fun and strange directions. My wife may have been watching a show about hoarders at the time.

    Trash Dragon

    Solitary, Huge, Intelligent, Hoarder

    Accidental trash avalanche (w[2d10] damage)

    Reach, Near, Far

    24 HP

    3 armor

The Hoarding Dragon, also referred to as the Trash Dragon takes it’s kin’s attraction to great piles of wealth to unhealthy, obsessive extremes.

Where other Dragons will collect hoards of precious metals and jewels, the Hoarder Dragon is not so discerning. It will collect any rubbish, trash, or miscellany it finds. A Trash Dragon’s hoard is often made up of worthless items and objects that It has picked up and simply cannot part with. It clings to these things, overstuffing it’s lair to the point where it can barely move without causing avalanches of rubbish.

Trash Dragons are seen as pitiable, pathetic creatures, but despite the trouble they cause, very few will seek out and kill them. While most of their hoard is worthless junk, there can sometimes be rare magical or valuable items in amongst the dross.

Instinct: To hoard trash and mundane items to excess

*When you feel threatened or uneasy, recede into your hoard.

*When your hoard is threatened, make weak arguments as to why you need every single item.

*When they steal something, chase them, and beg for it back

*When they kill you, pass your compulsion to them.
