Alternate title : The Voice : https://www.dropbox.com/s/rgd30vc5kyzcnlc/TheVoice.pdf

Inspired by ‘Snowcrash’.

A glass-cannon of sorts, the Lingomancer/ The Voice can ruin the day of an army of adversities as easily as he can his own efforts… and his cohorts!  A powerful bad-luck magnet.  Too indiscriminate to be part of a party, too dependent on others to go it alone.

In my campaign the Underdark exists, but none of the surface races except Goblins know about it.  As it works out, that includes the entire adventuring party.  So instead of mapping out an Underdark for my custom continent I wrote this rule for when the surface-dwellers attempt short-range (up to a day or two) navigation underground.  It replaces the Make A Perilous Journey roll.

When navigating the Underdark roll + WIS and lose 1 ration.  On a 10+ take 3.  On a 7-9 take 2.  On 6 or less take one.

* You don’t become so lost you cannot return to where you started from

* You are not ambushed

* You find what you are looking for

* You don’t lose an extra ration and day finding your way

* You discover something unexpected

If the party didn’t have a swordmage who can make equipment lantern-bright AND blink over terrain obstacles I would add something like

* You don’t expend 2 Adventuring Gear per party member on torches, climbing gear, and miscellany spelunking expendables.

I introduced an adventure hook to my players this week.  They were in a mountainside town offloading (laundering) gold they had acquired (stolen) from an abandoned (monster filled / ghost protected) Dwarven mine that had been abandoned for seventy years.

The next morning all the fathers of youngish/teenage girls head towards the mountains, picks in hand, to find gold.  That way they can finally up and move out of town, start their lives over in a new place before The Dragon returns and demands a new maiden sacrifice.

Hook introduced, the players heroically….. try to convince the women The Dragon is likely to only take virgins.  And then after a day or two wander out of town in the opposite direction of The Dragon’s nest.

I love Dungeon World – in a D&D / Pathfinder game I’d have to force the situation back towards the dragon / sacrifice angle or abandon at least an hour’s prep work.  As it is, I can forget the thirty second made-in-the-shower dragonslaying expedition and throw something entirely different (made on the fly) at them.

(If anyone’s upset about them taking advantage of the situation, know that the one who instigated the scenario also fell into magma during this session, losing both legs [shattered on impact, then the flesh burnt off as he sank while our Druid tried to pull him out] and being permanently scarred waist-to-hairline.)

When being questioned while under the effects of (the Truthspeak spell, the Grand Inquisitor of Elik the Reaping’s gaze, too much booze, etc) roll + CHR and obey the results for the remainder of the conversation.

10 +  : Your character can say whatever they like.

7-9 : Your character cannot directly lie, but can lie by omission or balance their statements to give false impressions.

6- : Not only can you not lie, either in spirit or literally, you feel compelled to answer any questions.  You also blurt out something … unfortunate… and true.  The GM may ‘help’ you with coming up with your error.

So, a while ago I switched a game I was running from Pathfinder to Dungeon World.  One of the players was an Inquisitor – I stumbled upon an excellent writeup for the class, but unfortunately I can’t find the link to give the author credit!  I switched it over from a text file to a print-and-fill PDF in the style of the default classes…
