Someone over on the Dungeon world Discord Server wanted help with a magical item to give their Paladin of the Phoenix God. They wanted an item that in essence, was a phoenix, and at the end of its life cycle would turn back into ashes until its wielder committed a paladin-y act. So, i wrote this up and figured it could be reworded to fit just about any god of valor or healing:
The Rising Phoenix
This legendary artifact is a gift from the phoenix god Alar to his most devout servant. It can change form depending on how its wielder most needs it.
When you will The Rising Phoenix to change form in order to better protect someone else, roll+WIS. On a hit, choose the form below that you need the most; the Phoenix changes to take the shape of that form. Additionally, on a 7-9, gain 1 Ashes. With each Ashes gained, the Peonix becomes closer to the end of its life cycle.
Form of the Claw close, two handed, +2 damage, divine, 2 weight
In the form of the Claw, the Rising Phoenix becomes a weapon that fits the nature of the wielder: greatsword, waraxe, spear, or staff. Whatever weapon it takes the shape of, it glows red and gold with divine flames. Those without Alar’s blessing find it unbearable to hold or even carry, and Alar’s enemies find it unbearable to merely gaze upon. Should the Claw be used for a deed other than smiting the wicked, it immediately renews its cycle, as an egg.
Form of the Wing +2 armor, divine, 2 weight
In the form of the Wing, the Rising Phoenix becomes a shield in the shape of a phoenix’s crossed wings. It has the ability to protect its bearer and anyone they stand in defense of from harm. Weapons carried by the foes of Alar that strike it are destroyed. Should the Wing be used for a deed other than defending the defenseless, it immediately renews its cycle, as an egg.
Form of the Tear divine, 0 weight
In the form of the Tear, the Rising Phoenix becomes a salve, glowing golden with the radiance of the morning dawn. Spreading it upon a wound, no matter how grievous, immediately heals the sick of 2d4 HP and cures all debilities. In time, it could be used to reattach or even regrow lost limbs. When used on a corpse whose soul is not long lost from this world, it will raise them anew with 1 HP at the cost of gaining 1 Ashes. Should the Tear be used for a deed other than healing the virtuous or the defenseless, it immediately renews its cycle, as an egg.
Form of the Egg divine, 2 weight
Whenever the Rising Phoenix’s life cycle renews, it becomes a large egg, about the size of a person’s head, that shimmers with all of the colors of the sunrise. When its bearer performs a truly selfless act or desperately requires its help, the egg shall hatch and immediately become the form most needed of it.
I figure it gives the paladin plenty of options to choose from, as well as an epic and cliffhanger-like move to serve their god. It also gives the GM a really interesting way to use up their resources by giving the item more Ashes when they deal a particularly brutal strike or take a particularly gruesome blow.
As far as how many ashes it takes to renew the life cycle (someone asked about that), intentionally left that open ended so that, on a miss, you could say “well, you had acquired 4 Ashes, so the artifact is tired and needs to recharge for a bit”

i’ll be running a one-shot for some friends tomorrow, all of which are fairly new to RPGs. They are all extremely worried about their abilities to create new characters. Does anyone have any resources they could recommend?

I used Brian Holland’s one-roll generators (all of them) to create a super quick one-shot for a 1-on-1 play, and it worked out great! I feel like the monster generator could be a little better (maybe if it had something to determine group size, as well as adding more chances to add more features). I wrote out all of the results as i would (and did) tell them to my players.
You find yourself in an underground cavern wherein reside a race of bat people, called Khordri, whose… excrement produces the finest clay in the world. Orcs have set up a trading post, exchanging various goods and services for the clay which can be made into fine pottery or even into armor. However, the only source of water leading into the cave- a waterfall which cascades into a pool, has recently started making people sick.
Around the same time as the water started going bad, a cave was discovered behind the waterfall. It was sealed with an iron gate that has resisted any attempt to open it. Markings on the gate identify it as some kind of lair, and the gate itself is fashioned out of a foreign material. Its position and construction clearly signify that it was built to keep something from getting through it, as well as to prevent people from knowing about it. What nobody has seen yet is the rotting skeletons of what appears to be an army lying inside.
These skeletons are only a small insight into what lies within the cave, for, there are no signs of wounds on them. It’s almost as if they just… died. In addidion, there are imprints (to be discovered later, of course) of large feet/claws along the cave floor. They seem to me of a beast so ancient or mysterious, that they are not in any bestiary or history book. Ever. By any race. (A full write up at the end).
The lone PC has found himself in the company of an Orc named Dagmar. This chaotic singer works for the trading post in the tavern/inn and serves as the entertainment. He originally came with a message for Archibald, the PC: Help solve the town’s problem and you will be set free, thief. After all, Archibald
was the one who discovered the cave… after running off with 300 Coin worth of pottery. Dagmar is regretting receiving the position, as this little brat is extremely aggravating. He’d better get paid double for this. Also, Dagmar isn’t really aware of it yet, but he knows the identity of the beast in the cave.
The Stalking Death
Solitary, Large, Terrifying, Devious
Wings, The Reek of Death
Instinct: To Kill
================
16 HP, 3 armor
Bite (d10+1 close, reach)
================
Imagine a really, REALLY big bat. Now make it undead. Now make its bones extra white and extra visible.
And on top of its massive fangs, give it the ability to bring you closer to death than the average sword swing- just by being in the same room. That’s pretty accurate.
-Bring them close to death with its presence alone
-Cause even minor wounds to fester and rot
The beast ended up being a mutated Khordri which was sealed off to prevent it from attacking the village.

This was posted a while back in here somewhere, but it makes references to things that aren’t necessarily in Dungeon World, but could easily be in some hack. Does anyone recognize it and/or know what it’s from? https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0lFq3ECDQDQWXRtT2ttbUJ2aGM/view?usp=sharing
EDIT: Through some further digging on my own i have discovered it to Jeremy Strandberg ‘s Heartbreaker World PbtA game

Does anyone have any reworked/reworded/new Basic and Special Moves, that fix problems in the ones from the book?
Does anyone have any reworked/reworded/new Basic and Special Moves, that fix problems in the ones from the book? I’m looking for things like Jeremy Strandberg’s rewrite of Parley or David Guyll’s fixed Undertake a Perilous Journey.

A compendium class i came up with a while ago and recently rediscovered while i was browsing my computer:
Woodsman CC
When you have spent a week alone in the woods, with nothing but your wits and your bare hands, you may consider the Woodsman an available compendium class and may take Scrounge instead of one of your class’ advanced moves when you next level up.
———
STATS: Increase your max HP by 2, but not greater than 10+ your Constitution.
———
STARTING MOVES:
SCROUNGE
Whenever you Make Camp in a natural environment with plentiful flora and/or fauna, roll+ WIS. *On a 10+, you find enough resources for you and one other person in your party to have one ration, provided for you by the land. *On a 7-9, your findings are slim; you only have enough for one meal for one person. *On a miss, you might not have recognized many of the local abundances, but on the bright side, you found plenty of berries, roots, or small animals to eat- enough for everyone in your party!
Each person who partakes will be supplied with a ration’s worth of food, but their
stomach and intestines might not be too happy with them… at best.
———
2-5 ADVANCED MOVES
COMPENDIUM OF LEAVES
Take +1 to spout lore about any natural poisons or ailments brought on by natural means.
NATURAL REMEDY
When you look through the underbrush for emergency medical supplies, roll+ WIS. *On a 10+, you find enough to make either Poultices and Herbs (2 uses, slow, 1 weight) or a lesser healing potion (0 weight). Lesser healing potions can be used to heal yourself or someone else instantly of 5 HP. *On a 7-9, you find just enough to make one use of Poultices and Herbs (1 use, slow, 1 weight).
WORKSHOP IN THE WILDS
When you spend a few hours fashioning a weapon out of what you can find around you, roll+ WIS. *On a hit, you make a makeshift weapon from the list below, but *On a 10+, you are also able to repair one piece of armor or one weapon you have that is damaged.
-Shillelagh (close, 2 weight)
-Wooden Shield (+1 armor, 1 weight)
-Wooden Spear (Reach, thrown, 1 weight)
FOLLOW ME
When you undertake a perilous journey you can take two roles. You make a separate roll for each.
———
6-10 ADVANCED MOVES
HOME IN THE FOREST
Recovering in the forest counts as recovering under the care of a healer for you.
CAMOUFLAGE
When you keep still and quiet in natural surroundings, you cannot be detected by non-magical means.
VOICE OF THE WILDS
Though you cannot converse with them, you may parley with animals of the forest.
