What’s next for L&B?

I have two projects currently in the works: Stonetop, Jeremy Strandberg’s ambitious Dungeon World campaign kit, and a much smaller, unannounced DW project. These things are occupying all of my editing and layout hours, but the creative juices keep flowing and need focus. So I ask you, illustrious members of this Community, where should I place that focus?

The three things at the forefront of my brain are:

Freebooters on the Frontier, 2nd edition

A standalone version of the DW hack, improved and balanced according to user feedback, with integrated monster, treasure, and exploration rules.

West of the Mississippi, 1840-1880

Working title for an “Old West” *World RPG that is playset-based (think Fiasco) and built around the tensions between different cultural and cross-cultural groups. The hope would be to explore drama-rich pockets of North American history from multiple points of view, with greater emphasis on and respect for the experiences of indigenous peoples and marginalized groups than you usually find in Western RPGs.

Thrilling Tales of Adventure!

10 years ago I started designing a pulp adventure board game, and took it through 16 working prototypes before I burned out. Recently, I’ve been feeling like it might be worth trying to take it to completion again. In the intervening time, Eldritch Horror has accomplished some of the stuff I was going for in a better way, but no one has scooped the adventure-building mechanic I came up with, which was the strongest part of my design. Old records of the games development can be found here: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/28519/thrilling-tales-adventure

If you have an opinion about where I should be directing my game-brain, please vote!

EDIT: THE PERILOUS WILDS IS SOLD OUT

It’s been a touch over a year since the project funded, and my print run of 500 is just about depleted. Still plenty of copies of A Book of Beasts and Freebooters, though, since for some reason I also printed 500 copies of each of them. Live and learn.

Thanks to all of you who helped make it possible. Lampblack & Brimstone has more in the works (Stonetop! et al), but things on the game publishing front are slow moving at the moment. Wrapping up teaching stuff and drawing comic books I need to draw.

If you want to order hard copies of The Perilous Wilds, A Book of Beasts, and/or Freebooters on the Frontier, see the linked post.

I’m planning to run my home group through a Night’s Black Agents campaign using the Dracula Dossier, but I have…  issues with the GUMSHOE system. So I made a PbtA hack of NBA. The idea is to be able to use official Pelgrane adventures/campaigns as-is, without having to adapt much.

I offer it here, untested, for anyone who might find it of use. Feedback welcome. Note that I left “Vampirology” and “Occult Studies” off the character sheet because my players think they’re going to be playing a straight espionage game.

PLAYTEST GROUPS WANTED

PLAYTEST GROUPS WANTED

PLAYTEST GROUPS WANTED

Lampblack & Brimstone is pleased to announce that Jeremy Strandberg has agreed to let us publish Stonetop, his Dungeon World campaign about an isolated village community struggling to survive at the edge of the known world.

Jeremy has been working on this project for a long time, and he’s recently managed to pull of the material together into a working whole. Now we just need to see what happens when other people get their hands on it.

So! We’re ready for some serious playtesting. Interested?

We’re looking for groups who:

• Play every 2-3 weeks (or more!)

• Can commit to actually playing 3+ sessions

• Are willing to specifically try out certain content

• Will ask questions & provide thoughtful feedback

• Can put up with potentially frequent changes

If that sounds like you, please speak up in the comments.

If you’re interested in playtesting, but don’t have a group that meets the requirements above, let us know and we’ll see if we can’t put some of y’all together.

If you’d like to take a look but aren’t really interested in playtesting, that’s cool, too!  Click the #Stonetop  hashtag and check out the content. It might not be totally up-to-date but it’ll give you an idea of what we’re working on.

They look bad through the Dropbox interface, but should look and print fine through Acrobat.

I’d like to broaden my artist pool for an upcoming project. I’m looking specifically for illustrators who:

1) work in b&w (traditional media preferred over digital)

2) have a feel for the drama and subtlety of wilderness landscapes

Please make suggestions and/or link me to anyone who fits that bill!

The thing I like most about BBtW is that each archetype has its own unique stats and basic moves list. In practice this really helped the players get a quick handle on angles of approach.

I worked on a pulp adventure boardgame for a number of years that ultimately got shelved (https://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/28519/thrilling-tales-adventure), but now I find myself wondering if it wouldn’t have been better as an RPG all along…
