What do you do with a boss monster that has multiple distinct forms, each with its own moves? Do you write it up as a single monster with a whole mess of moves, and just use the fiction to determine what moves are available? Or do you write up a separate monster for each distinct form?

I see that Ancient Vampire Lord uses the former method, elegantly stating the multiple forms in a single move:

But in that case, the most of the forms are common animals that probably wouldn’t require memory prompts for their moves.  For boss monsters that transform into demonic chimerae or mythic creatures, would you follow the same pattern?

I reckon the correct answer is “whatever works for you”, but I was wondering if there are any examples from the field?

Here’s a new project I’m starting up: Monthly Monsters via Patreon.

Here’s a new project I’m starting up: Monthly Monsters via Patreon.

Here’s a new project I’m starting up: Monthly Monsters via Patreon. Written by me, illustrated by Nathan Jones (witchpit.com). Every month, we release a monster, with a full-page illustration and 3-7 pages of writing (half-letter pages, that is), but only to the people who pledge $2 a month. But if you pledge $4 a month, we also send you one or more Bonus Monster. Once we have enough for a book, we make a book of monsters and send everyone who is subscribed to pledge a free pdf copy of it.

See our first example Monthly Monster: the Satyrical Dramatists.

Just like Kickstarter, there are stretch goals and pledge levels. The higher total amount we have, the more monsters we can afford to make and release, which means more monsters for your $4 pledge, and more free books for everyone who pledges (because we’ll finish them faster). Plus, we’re looking at rewards for higher pledge levels, like getting a print copy mailed to you, being able to request a monster, and having a random draw for free original artwork. Have ideas? Let me know.

This is a new thing, so I’d like to get feedback from people who are interested in this project. What would you like out of a Monthly Monster campaign? What would make this project more attractive to you? What aspects are most important, which ones do you not care about?

This is my first time making up a monster for Dungeon World, and I’m pretty sure it’s a sign that I hate my players.

This is my first time making up a monster for Dungeon World, and I’m pretty sure it’s a sign that I hate my players. The party is heading deep into an ancient Dwarven Kingdom to find one of the cracks in the walls of Death’s kingdom (Death in our game being mostly a neutral force who’s not terrible fond of souls getting out as undead).

I’ve run three sessions so far; their Cleric has made a last breath roll in two of them, and I just flat killed the druid when the party got ambushed by a bulette. And looking at what the mountain king has going for him, I think I’m going to see a complete party wipe when they get into combat with the ancient king.

I would like to share the monster I made for Dungeon World, The Night Witch will be on every italian book of Dungeon World.

Claudia Cangini drew the image.

Here you can find the founding campaign for Italian edition of DW: http://it.ulule.com/dungeon-world/

The Night Witch

Solitary, Magic, Stealthy, Planar, Intelligent

Star shards (d12+1 damage ignores armor)

Near, Far

16 HP – 4 Armor

Special Qualities: Night’s soul, Watch through the stars

The legend of this creature is known across all cultures. It tells the story of a tall and serious woman, her eyes black and dotted with lights, like a night sky. It is said that the Night Witch arrives at the outskirts of a village just after sunset, when stars are not yet appeared and everything is dark, because she takes her magic from night and darkness. She search for children to grow up and love, because she doesn’t have a child. It is also said, in exchange of a promise, she offers treasures, magical items and every possible wonder from this and other plans. Help the Night Witch and she’ll reward you. Betray her and the day will no longer exist for you; only the darkness of a night without stars. Instinct: Collect children.

– Create an illusion of herself

– Offer a rich reward in exchange for a promise

– Cancel the effects of any spell

– Show an illusion of a possible future

Last year I played “The Dreaming Crucible” as Black Fairy, I created this creature as nemesi of the young hero; I liked very much that game and the world we created with it, so I decided to celebrate it with this monster.

I can’t wait to play!
