My party members are helping a conclave of wizards complete a ritual by rooting out the traitor among their 4 lieutenants. I want each to be a unique, iconic magic-user for the party to investigate. So far I’ve got:

(these are descriptive names, not npc names 🙂

Golem-mancer – has created a variety of golems, and his flesh golem poses as him. The real wizard’s body is kept safe inside the large iron golem.

Enchanter – a throng of dominated and enchanted humanoids, all dressed similarly – which among them is the real mage?

Drug addict – uses illegal substances to boost spellcasting, at the cost of sanity and health.

I’m still looking for one more strong thematic take on a mage, and haven’t come up with anything on my own. Would love your help thinking dangerously and portraying a fantastic world.

I’ve don’t think I ever noticed before.

I’ve don’t think I ever noticed before… Dangers (as in fronts) have an impulse. Monsters (e.g. goblins) have an instinct.

Both are written as “to .

Both describe the general behavior of the thing. An danger’s impulse is “its crucial motivation,” and “what pushes it to fulfill it’s impending doom.” A monster’s instinct “describe its goals at a high level” describe “what does it want that causes problems for others.” They seem pretty similar to me, at most just a difference in scale.

Given that it’s pretty common for dangers to also be monsters… it seems redundant to use two different terms.

What about you? Do the two terms mean something different to you?

For things that are both dangers and monsters (e.g. a dragon, a lich, a demon lord)… have you gotten value from having a separate impulse and instinct?

I’ve got a party exploring a crumbling underground city where the souls of all of the people have been trapped in a magical artifact and the bodies are animated by some dark force tonight.

They’re headed to the wizard’s tower to attempt to free the souls and lay them to rest, help me to Think Dangerously and come up with some trouble for them!

Here’s version 1.1 of the “One Sheet RPG” which may get a new name if I publish it into a “booklet” format. This version has some changes as a result of suggestions made here and on other threads.
