I am going to run DW at PAX East for strangers that probably don’t know the rules.

I plan to play one three hour block with each group, with the first session rules, and some ideas that hopefully fit into whatever world my players create.

What should I bring with me?

A great imagination,

Ability to say “Yes and…

Energy and enthusiasm to ensure a good time.

PDF version of the rules on my tablet, and a hardcopy.

Dice and pencils for everyone.

3×5 cards that can represent NPCs, locations, threats, and other objects of import.

Some colored markers.

Are there any “smaller” character sheets?

What flavor text would you print out ahead of time to bring?

What parts of the PDF should I print out ahead of time?

Are there any other resources out there that already compile everything I should bring with me?

What else?

Thanks!

Help.   Kolbold ideas needed.

Help.   Kolbold ideas needed.

Hey role players, I need some guidance.  I asked my party “what powerful force from “downwind” ( of all this burning wreckage)  comes to investigate, and how do you know they are coming?”

They answered “a kobold scouting party is coming, and they know this because they hear the drums in the distance.”

And so, let there be kobolds.

they refers to the kobolds.

1 they have secrets.

2 they have 60-90 kobolds in this scouting party

3 they are looking for information

4 they are almost out of time, and need a nesting location right now

5 there are 4 factions.  priests, “drivers”, warriors, and lizard handlers

6 the war wagons were apparently way too cool, and the party simply surrendered themselves to the patrol, and was peacefully escorted to the kobold scout camp, even though they are convinced it is a bad idea.

7 every attempt by the players to not go to the main camp was met with polite and firm redirection of the conversation….

8  The kobolds understand the human language, but do not speak it

9  The kobolds fed cooked human meat to the lizard man in the party when he tried to get the war wagon to stop for lunch.

10 the bard was given a new music instrument when she asked them to drive a different direction.

11 a priest is very angry at the party’s arrival

What do I do now as they have surrendered themselves to 60+ evil, human eating kobolds with some really cool engineering wonders?

I started a new campaign Monday night.

I started a new campaign Monday night.

I started a new campaign Monday night.  I went in with the idea of a harpy attack on a PC family dinner which included all the PCs.   I chose this due to a cool harpy image I saw, and feeling that endangering someone’s family would be a cool start.  We ended the session mid fight, since it was late.

My dilemma is… I don’t know the harpies’ motivation yet, and they have felt too passive so far, partially because a PC rolled a 3 when discerning reality and the unwelcome truth was seeing  eight more harpies lurking in the trees watching.

Background:

The character chosen for this family meal is Sauran.  Or one of the lizardfolk.  He has 18-20 family members present, 11 of them kids, only 3 are “combat ready”  The dinner is taking place at the families heritage tree, which is where the family lays it’s eggs. (makes lizardfolk babies)

One of these family members is hated by the druid for summoning up a pack of unnatural demons to devour a competitor earlier that day.  The druid is looking for a way to kill that family member, without alienating the family.

The attack started at the other side of this huge tree, 2 harpies made an unnatural noise that felt like lave inside your brain, and then attacked two “helpless” aunts that were up in the tree,  preparing “ritual dishes and deserts” while everyone else was seated to eat at long tables on the ground.

The action broke up into two sides very quickly.

on the table side of the tree.

The druid took an owl shape and is investigating the harpes above the family.   most of them are ignoring him as an animal, although the druid just attacked a harpy… so this could change.

The thief is hiding under a  table by a child(that is still trying to eat dinner).  The thief is ready to pounce on any harpy that attacks the child.

Most of the family is running around confused.  two of them got out some javelins, but don’t seem to know what to do with them.

The harpies so far have been patiently watching.  (why?)

on the far side of the tree:

both aunts ripped to pieces while still up in the tree.

The gladiator (the lizardfolk player)  the cleric and one brother have killed one of the harpies, and are in battle with the second one.

Questions:

So why did the harpies want the sauren aunts to bleed on the heritage tree?

Why are most of the harpies just watching?  How do I teach the druid that an barn owl is no match for a pack of harpies, and do that lesson in a fun way that allows me to be a fan of the druid?

Should I just ask the players to answer these questions to start out?  or do any of you have cool ideas?

thanks!

I have a player that feels the base character classes are so “1970’s”  and he would rather return to the 1980’s when we played runequest, and characters got good at whatever they used, without being “locked in” to their little boxes.  Does anyone have a “generalist” style character, or perhaps other ideas on how to keep a player that wants to feel like the world is open to any choices for advancement?   I want to support him and play with him, without interfering with the other characters story space… any help is welcome.

I am working on a move for my shape shifting Druid.

I am working on a move for my shape shifting Druid.

I am working on a move for my shape shifting Druid.  what do people think of this?  both my process, and any advice for a fourth version:

Second version:

You explore the caves as a bat.  You discover two things of interest, also  Roll 2d6 + the number of holds you wish to spend.

On a 10+ pick 3

On a 7-9 pick 1

You return to safety as a bat

You do not find something that hunts bats

You find something valuable or powerful

You find what you are looking for

I think the first and second choice overlap.

I think the third and fourth could be the same thing… in the current situation this is not the case, but as a custom move added to the game, I see potential to overlap.

I am worried about a driud spending 3 holds.  That is only a 1 in 12 chance of getting a 6-.

third version:

When you search or explore an area alone, and in a form native to that location, you discover something of interest, the gm will tell you what.  Also roll 2d6 + INT.

On a 10+ pick 2

on a 7-9 pick 1

You find what you are looking for

You do not take a long time

You do not get noticed

For this more generic move, I though maby there are no holds… but abilities could modify the roll, and INT seems like something that goes well with scouting, finding what you want, and staying out of trouble.

This new version does not feel as powerful as the previous one, but all of the choices are things that are wanted.  thoughts?

Starting a new short term Dungeon World game on Thursday nights.   Would enjoy getting 1 more player.  We get online about 8:15pm, and begin play about 8:30.  This is EST timezone.  Anyone interested/ able to join?   I suspect this is will run each Thursday in June.

LF Dungeon World GM.   I have been running a game on Thursday nights for a couple of weeks.  People are having fun, but it is occasionally a bit clunky.  Last night was our first attempt at using tricks of the trade move, and well… I just don’t think I got it right.

If someone wants to run a game Thursday nights in June from 8:15 EST until roughly 11pm, I have 3-4 players including myself that would enjoy playing and learning with you.

We have been using Roll20, with skype for voice, since the roll20 app does not seem to provide voice to one of the players.
