This is my first real attempt at a base class.

This is my first real attempt at a base class. It comes directly from Johnstone Metzger ’s excellent Class Warfare. The formatting is not quite right, since I couldn’t figure out how to get the header and footer closer together in the .docx template I found on this forum.

The Legionnaire combines the Standard Bearer, the Defender, and the Veteran to make a Roman Legion style cooperative fighter. Any (kind, courteous) feedback is appreciated.

Also, thanks to Dylan Knight (who’s name didn’t show up for tagging) for telling me how to share this.

  1. I dig it though the standard bearer move seems limited though that seemed to be a common theme with the moves in this. Maybe have a move about techniques / training you received in the legion.  And for the standard bearer maybe add a line or 2 about . And roll Cha on a 10+ choose 2 on a 7-9 choose 1 on a 6- choose 1 but the GM fucks with it.

Edit for the choose 1 and 2  I meant extra effects kind of like the bard’s song.

  2. I would like to think that the legionnaire training is implied, rather than directly stated, but I could definitely make it more obvious. I did also take the Standard Bearer move nearly word for word from Class Warfare, but I didn’t want to make it too complicated. The Legionnaire should always benefit from teamwork, and there are more complicated moves later on when you level up. But thanks for the feedback!

  3. Yesssss, it begins!

Legion Hospitality feels like it might depend on having hirelings? Like you hire your old war buddies to travel with you and they give you auto-success on make camp. It’s cool, but requires some specific setup, so it might be better as an advanced move. The other two moves are fairly simple mechanically, which leaves room for a third that is kind of complicated, like maybe Skirmisher or Battle Plans (to show the legionnaire’s training).

  4. I feel like strict formation should tie into defend in some manner. The move already allows you to do that so why not work within those parameters?

When you and your allies engage an enemy in a tight battle formation, it counts as standing in defense f your allies and you gain an additional 2 hold you may only spend on redirecting an attack to you.

Something like that. It gives the class an active move to roll for too, which is a good thing to have I think.

How do temporal hitpoints work in the fiction?  Also, do they really work against any attack going at them over the time? So they basically take +1d6 armor ongoing?

Continuing from there, if you can give your allies up to 6 armor forward – why would you want to redirect damage to yourself? You don’t get that extra armor right? So most of the time it will be better for them to take the hit because they can take it much much better then you. The should form a ring around you and protect you while you have your standard up…

  5. The way I thought it worked was just like temporary HP from D&D. You basically heal everyone for that much, even if they hadn’t already taken the damage. It’s just a little extra buffer. Unlike armor, it does go away.

Remember the difference between ongoing (which lasts until some trigger says otherwise) and forward (which is basically a one off deal). Everyone in the party gets a 1d6 (or d8) buffer that, once it goes away, is gone.

  6. Yeah okay, I can see that the wording supports that now. I missread it earlier today. Sorry for fuss.

I do however still wonder if that kind of mechanic is needed here. What does it represent? Is it an extra morale push?

What I am saying is that maybe you want to have other moves that allow people to do extra things while they still have temporary hitpoints left.

An easy and obvious (not necessarily good) possibility would be something like:

As long as your allies have temporary hitpoints they deal an additional d4 damage.
