Something I noticed today: the dragon doesn’t have the intelligent tag. Is this intentional or a mistake?

Mistake.
Easy enough fix, of course.
Though beastial big-lizard dragons are cool too. Go with whichever you like. Or maybe both—true old intelligent dragons and the degenerate beast dragons, living side by side. Maybe the true dragons keep the others like pets.
Perhaps because intelligence is subjective? That seems a copout, because surely it’s at least “as smart as a human or thereabouts”.
Maybe because dragons in fiction are often tricked by clever heroes? Whether left out intentionally or not, adding the intelligent tag is an easy thing to do if that suits your game— I think it would for my tastes.
My question is the 16 hp. Shouldn’t it have 20? Solitary, huge = 20, right?
Again, any easy change to make….
Yes, 20 is correct.
With dragons I always assumed intelligence was related to age- young dragons are monsters, and those that survive it grow to become ancient and wise.
What Steve said. Compare and contrast with Dragon Whelp (pg 248)
Who cares if it has the intelligent tag? A dragon is intelligent if you want it to be. All that matters is whether or not they are intelligent in your game. The hoarder tag might even be removed in some games, if it is consistent with the fiction.
I see the monster section as examples of monster creation, not rules written in stone.
Kasper Brohus You’re right that tags can and should be fluid. But obviously someone cares (me), at least in as far as wondering about authorial intent. The authors aren’t the final word, but they are the first word, and it is interesting to know what they thought before I decide what I think.
Paul Stefko That is a valid point 😉 Although the book also states that “It is only true if someone has said it is”. Authorial intent in DW is more “whatever is cool for you” it seems.
For me, this points out one of my guilty pleasures with DW— maybe I hadn’t initially planned on the creature being intelligent, but along comes an Unwelcome Truth revealed, and now it is much smarter than the players thought. And they’ve just blundered into its trap….
The monster stats were very hard to edit, as you basically had to recheck math on every one. That means that some of them are a little off. The great thing is, it doesn’t matter much.
The forthcoming online monster maker will also make this a little easier, as the (simple) math will all happen for you.
Sage LaTorra Why didn’t you just make a “Monster Creator” with a GUI that took care of the math? I’d have done it 🙂
That’s exactly what we’re doing now.
Really? For public release?
Yeah, it was one of our stretch goals. It’ll be web-based (but mobile friendly). In a very small alpha release right now as I add features.
Hah, i was making one in an effort to learn JavaScript 🙂
Ha! Sage’s last comment was the only one I could see. I think intelligent dragons would be a really rad stretch goal.
The monster app sounds really cool, especially if we can automatically add our creations to a database other users can browse.
A front builder form that asks you questions and spits your answers out in a nicely formatted, digestible completed front would also be really cool too.
Mad Adric we’re dreaming big with this one. We’re in the middle of scoping what’s actually possible vs. what we’d dream of, and should know more within the next two weeks (as I have some downtime to dedicate to it). We’re aiming to open it up to everyone (backers first) in late March.
Woo!
Also, I think I will stick with 16 hp, because the 16 hp dragon is one of the best bits of AP ever.
