One Shot World is a hack of Dungeon World that removes most of the long-form mechanics and replaces them with simple rules designed to facilitate one-shots and short campaigns.

I have recently worked very hard with Greg Soper (of Minimal Playbooks Plus fame) to completely remake the original playbooks – they are now cleaner, easier to read, and far, far prettier. We’ve also replaced or rewritten the moves and many of the basic rules.

Take a look here:

Feedback and criticism welcome.

For reference, here is the original hack: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/242339

When I finish redoing the GM Booklet I’ll publish it on OBS.

  1. Cool! I am very much looking forward to the booklet!

(Very minor nitpick: I’d have to rename the Sindarin option for the Fighter, given my group’s relationship to Tolkien.)

  2. I’m on MeWe and discord. Also Reddit. Also I’ll push out changes via DTRPG.

Suggestions on a better elven name? I think I’m going with Isil – Moon.

  3. Thanks. I’ll keep a look out!

    That works better for me.

Otherwise Chrysaor (from The Faerie Queene) perhaps?

Or Lævateinn for more Norse feel?

(Just riffing from the Wikipedia List of mythological objects)

  4. Blake Hutchins can you expand?

The idea is to help players make a unique character without getting overwhelmed. It seems to work pretty well, and players who want “more” can definitely mix and match if they choose.

  5. Sure, and it’s simply a reaction based on my own tastes. I realize that you have layout constraints and appreciate the effort made.

I thought the backgrounds were one of the neatest parts of the previous versions of OSW, adding a lot of flavor and offering some real differential among the playbook options, so it was disappointing that they ended up being cropped from four to three. For me–and I’m not speaking for others, obviously–it’s enough of a loss that I’ll probably just continue to use the earlier versions.
