Jeremy Strandberg, the Dungeon World Tavern seems to have largely reconstituted over at MeWe, led through the perilous wilds by the staff of Yochai Gal and including bunches of people you enjoyed talking with over here.

I hope we don’t lose you though! How are you faring in these straitened times?

  1. Elad Hen Do you have an alternative? I would also prefer something open source, decentralized and usable – but it doesn’t exist. At least MeWe has no plans to sell user data – their business model is all about privacy, zero user tracking, etc. Of course, they might close – just as you said.

  2. John at Deep Six Delver thanks for the nudge and the mention.

I’ll likely make my way over there to at least check it out, but I’ve 1) got concerns about the platform and 2) have a lot on my plate and 3) am going through some blahs right now, which make me extra hesitant to jump in somewhere new.

So, expect me to at least swing by sometime in the next few weeks. But probably not right away.

  3. But you should read some other threads about its values of ultimate free speech regardless of content that enable some pretty repugnant stuff. It is also private, and remains to be seen how long it will be around. Each user has to make their own choice, but it does seem scary to me that in order to see what person you are allowing into your community to participate you have to do so blindly without seeing what they have posted in the past. I think the community should take a deep breath, try out different platforms and report out to the community about what they are seeing. I understand early adopters and hope they come back and report out. I personally based on my own research and the opinions of those I trust am not sure about MeWe. Some of the posts by the CEO are classic excuses for why he allows repugnant groups. These groups speech may be protected from the government censoring, but in the same way I wouldn’t buy a magazine or shop at a store that sold this stuff I don’t know I want to give the company that hosts them clicks and user numbers. I don’t see the latest white supremacy and nazi stuff at my local Barnes and nobles or local Library bulletin board and I don’t think of those institutions as groups that censor speech, but good communities. Whereas MeWe labels that repugnant stuff as politics and says they won’t inhibit any “legal” speech, and then says you don’t have to interact with them without realizing (or worse knowing full well, what they are doing) that by giving them a platform to ferment in they expand and tactitly support it. Maybe they will clean up their act or the gaming communities will change it, but right now I don’t think it is a good fit for me.

  4. Oh I am not doing that, hope it didn’t come across that way. I just don’t understand the hasty retreat. We have like months and months. My concern is that everyone is leaving now, so for those that are still looking will have a lot smaller community. I am looking forward to doing more posts about the actual game and reading posts about the game on g+ for at least the rest of the year
