Question for the Overmind: I’m working on a supplement for DW, and it’s getting pretty large in scope. I’m wondering if you, as a player or GM, would prefer any or all of the following from a source like DriveThruRPG.

  1. I never tried pregen Fronts, I’m not really sure I’d be at ease with them. One of the things I love about DW is making Fronts based on the PCs and the ideas flowing around the gaming table during a (hopefully) inspired first session.

Dungeon Starters, on the other hand, if done properly, can be useful in suggesting and promoting atmosphere and themes (rather than actual specific menaces or dangers) and can be a really fun and proper tool for a oneshot or a Con-sized game.

One thing you could do, I guess, rather than whole pregen Fronts is proposing new options for Dangers, if your setting is strongly themed about something (like, I don’t know, AI in a technological world, or something). But they should be significantly different from the one in the basic book. Also, some few but good and playtested custom moves would be good.

  2. If you don’t already have items for sale on drivethrurpg, I would suggest starting with a single playbook, either free or at most $.99. That will get you useful feedback, and also establish your legitimacy, so that when you go asking for $7.99 or $9.99 there will be some people willing to purchase. Given the huge amount of free or cheap DW material available, I think it’s going to be tough to get people to spend that much on a completely unknown author.

  3. I would suggest having the product in two parts. The playbook for cheap and then all the additional material as a separate purchase. Many will probably pick up the playbook alone, put a link to buy the additional material in the playbook pdf.

  4. Thanks again! The only problem with a sectional model is that I’d have to pay someone to lay out each piece, rather than just once, and the different cover art for each would be an extra expense. Otoh, I’ve never seen a DLC version of a setting before! Maybe it’s time!
