Spout lore theory question. I GM it like this:

On a 10+: You may make a ‘truth’ on the subject, tell the GM how your PC knows it to be true.

7-9: You propose a ‘truth’, but the GM gains +1 hold against you to make a move from the GM list.

The player may also just do the regular spout lore move, but I feel that this allows for more player fiat. I’ve never had it ruin a game, but I could see that a rambunctious could really take this and run.

Would you ever run this move this way? Is it bad, good, not important, etc.?

  1. It let’s you do a typical soft move from the GM list, but sometimes you want to delay. Eg, present an unwelcome truth: the wizard spouted lore that there is a secret path into the sanctum. When the party finally acts on it an hour later you can cash in your hold to say that the path is there, but (insert complication).

  2. After having had a player play Jacob Randolph’s Fool (War and Wonders bundle), i am extremely hesitant to allow anything that allows the player to make something up. See “Fool’s Wisdom”, which allows you to essentially do just this, only with a little more flavor. The Fool would use it about the swords of guards, saying they were cheap wooden swords painted to look like metal, or to say that the puddle of chemicals in the alchemist’s workshop was a gateway to a different dimension. Once bitten, twice shy.

  3. The thing about allowing the player to just make things up: whatever they make up should still fit the tone of the game.

“Make something up” doesn’t mean the player should be allowed to completely throw things off the rails. Other people, including the GM, still get veto power. You’re all telling this story together, and other people at the table are absolutely within their rights to say “Sorry, can you make up something else?” if the proposed element doesn’t fit.

  4. Chris Stone-Bush totally. I have never had a player abuse this power. If they said something like, ‘My PC just remembered that she has a nuke in her adventuring gear’, then I would put my foot down. But luckily, I’ve never had to do that.

    It’s still a conversation
