So I’m almost all the way through this amazing D&D podcasts epic run, when with episode 60 they change to a full on Dungeon World hack! They keep a lot of the same spells they had in D&D seemingly for show continuity.

They also introduce (to me at least) the concept of Assets, where instead of specific treasure you can gain an unnamed asset to be used at a later time. It works much the same way bonds work you can spend an asset to change a failure into a success.

Has anyone else played with this before? I would love to hear more instances, it has allowed the McElroy’s to take their RP to another level IMO.

  1. This is one of my favorite podcasts. I’ve been listening for a long time, but am also at about the point you are on the show because I listen with my wife on longer car rides, so a lot of time passes between listening.

I was really excited to hear Griffen switch to pbta style, because their game always felt that way to me anyway. They are coming to WA in December and I’m very excited!

  2. While I was excited by their (temporary) switch to a PbtA-ish system that seems much more suitable to the kind of storytelling they were doing, it was stripped down a little too much, and since it was the first time Griffin was running it, there were definitely hitches in how he handled move outcomes. So it never really clicked for me. But, it is promising to hear that their next adventures may be in other PbtA systems.

  3. Aaron Griffin so they would describe what their character was doing and and then if necessary roll for a resolution. Based on what they were doing they would be rewarded asset, bond, or xp. When they failed a roll they could use points from their asset pool to make up the difference. They could also use their asset pools to help each other. They just described an asset that they had procured and how it helped to create success. Much like the way bonds work in DW.

I have not seen them use xp, or bonds yet although they be been awarded plenty at this point.

  4. This is an AP podcast?

I’ve been tinkering with a playbook that sort of can do that with adventuring gear. So this is interesting.

But yeah, it doesn’t sound like it’s bonds you should be comparing it to.

  5. I love TAZ and was ecstatic when Griffin mentioned they’d be trying out a PBTA hack, but his implantation ended up feeling half baked at best. They definitely should’ve stuck with their D&D lite and then attempted to stick more closely to a tried and true hack when they start this next campaign (or even DW RAW). I’m afraid that the lukewarm reception this change up got might scare him off from a system with a more story focused mechanic going forward.
