I’m currently working on a project that involves a lot of spells. My question to you all is, do you feel it is necessary to put the -1 to cast a spell in the description of every spell that has the ongoing duration, or is the ongoing duration enough to realize that? I did include an asterisk on the first instance that says “if a spell is ongoing you take -1 to cast a spell while it is still in effect”

  1. Yes, I think you should include it. Not all ongoing spells impose the -1 penalty. In fact… most of the standard wizard ones do NOT.

    Ongoing wizard spells that do impose a -1 to cast a spell while ongoing:

    * Summon Monster (level 5)

    * True Seeing (level 7)

    * Antipathy (level 9)

    The other ongoing wizard spells have some other limitation, like: only 1 target at a time, or a condition that ends it, or you can’t cast spells at all (or use any wizard moves) while the spell is ongoing.

    The ongoing cleric spells all involve a -1 ongoing to cast spell, but the wizard spells show that its not necessarily a feature.

  2. Or just add a “Concentration” tag, along with an explanation up-front of what it means. In fact, if you’re expanding beyond what’s in the book, the use of a variety of tags on spells could be a useful addition.

  3. Saul Alexander Yeah, there are a lot of spells. I would guess 120+ when I’m all done. That’s a rough estimate. I may make some unique tags for them.

    EDIT: I should mention that the 120+ is only the arcane spells. I plan on doing divine spells as well. Maybe even nature spells!

  4. Zen Ferno I planned on it. I may do each one individually or put all of them in a “Tome of Magic” or something of the sort. I may even put it in with my magic system that uses a resource mechanic.

  5. Mark Weis Oh trust me, I will! After all, this community would be my major source of customers, and I will be keeping an eye out after to see the feedback and whatnot that pops up. Got to keep improving!
