In the coming weeks, I will be running an open table with World of Dungeons (I love its simplicity, and gritty old school feel). I will be using flags to add depth to characters, and I will be using the Perilous Wilds DW supplement. My questions are:

1. What else should I do to get the most out of World of Dungeons?

2. I don’t have a lot of time for prep, and I anticipate my prep time will be devoted to making detailed almanacs and fleshing out dungeons. Should I also use fronts?

  1. That sounds awesome – I would sit at that table. Do you need Fronts? I feel like you’ll be doing a lot of episodic play, so compelling situations are your main concern. With flags and an almanac, you ought to have plenty.

  2. 1. Have ready explanations for new players how complicated rules work (also tell them how to get sacks, backpacks, and arrows cause they don’t appear in the rules.)

2 skip fronts, keep it simple, use some ideas from your head or literature to start the story, then use what the players tell you when you question them. Fronts are for longer campaigns.

  3. WoD benefits from making custom moves on the fly and adding them to the game as it goes on. It’s the “build a game while playing” functionality. So if the players keep trying to escape from people chasing them, add a basic move for chase mechanics.

  4. Gerard Snow Interesting, never realized that arrows and backpacks aren’t in the rules. As far as explaining complex rules go, are there any rules I should make sure to explain?

  5. Check out World of Dungeons Turbo as it’s has some excellent rules for gear. Though you might need to re-skin some stuff, you should be able to do so painlessly.

Also Planar Codex is amazing. If you’re not using it you’re doing yourself a disservice.

  6. Use a trello board use a trello board use a trello board. I’ve been using discord for a similar project, a living game of world of dungeons. Aka a shared setting any player can GM and contribute to.
