So I’m going to be running a Swords & Spaceships style game and I wanted to know everyone’s suggestions on classes that would be great for it. I already plan to use the core DW playbooks plus Adventures on Dungeon Planet and some of the Inverse World playbooks. Most likely Grim World as well. The idea is literally high fantasy, so all the normal races, creatures and magic will be mixed with technology and space travel. I thank you all in advance.

  1. Fully agree with reskinning.

The coolest thing like this I ever saw was an AW game where someone made a Gunlugger an an “evoker”, recording their weapons as spells. Out of ammo = out of mana.

  2. I agree, that is a lot of stuff.  My suggestion is to make your own and tailor the classes to what you want, stick with just 8 playbooks max.  Reskining is great too.  But this lets you tailor the feel of the game by the name of the Moves and by the names of the classes and the like.  DW and AW are great for customization.  Make it your game.

  3. So far people have chosen the following playbooks:

    Fighter

    Alchemist

    The Orc

    Technician

    Brawler

I am planning on pitching the Gunslinger to the last player, but that’s our sci-fantasy line up it seems. Thanks for your input!

  4. Gunslinger is good.

I suggest instead of Fighter: Blader.  An energy blade wielder, not Jedi.

You can take the current classes and give them a slight reskin and a bit of an upgrade.

Heh, Your game almost sounds like Flash Gordon.

  5. Have you read: Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman’s Star of the Guardians series?  The first one is called: The Lost King.  It had characters that were called Blood Royal, that were genetically engineered to be a superior human.  They wielded a Bloodsword, which was an energy sword that had both a blade option and a shield option.  The sword worked sort of like a light saber but it contained a virus that helped both power it (using calories from the Blood Royal) and mentally control it’s modes and activation.  It had needles that injected into the hand and basically attached the sword and user.  The Energy Sword could absorb energy blasts (common in the world) or even possibly deflect non-energy attacks.  It was death for a non-Blood Royal to attempt to use it due to the virus being toxic.

I was thinking that the Blader could be a similar creation..Heck you could even make a Blood Royal: insert type here, as a playbook.

Also, if you are doing a Swords&Spaceships you forgot to have a Pilot Playbook.

  6. Pilot is actually a role that one of them can take if they want. But most piloting will just involve Defy Danger using DEX or perhaps a Maneuverability stat of the ship they are flying. I’m not sure which yet.
