My group and I are playing a game using the starter ‘The Valley of the Titans’ by Sabe Jones.
In the valley is a creeping menace of shadows that approach people on watch and convince people to come out of the firelight.
We’ve established that the shadows hate fire and are causing the animals to go.mad and attack anything and everything.
One of my players has made it his mission to destroy the shadows and I want to make a compendium class for him to highlight this. Any ideas on moves that don’t just add bonuses when fighting the shadows? I want a little more flavour than that…
Ps, Sabe Jones, awesome starter… Thank you
Here is a link, by the way.

I think a move related to some sort of illusionary distraction in low light conditions would be neat. When you try to entice someone into the shadows, roll+WIS …
When you have been lost in the shadows and found your way back, you have learned to see through their tricks. Any time you successfully discern realities among the shadows, add the following to the questions you may choose:
What are the shadows trying to hide?
Who here is under the shadows’ influence?
How can the shadows be kept at bay?
Andrew Fish that’s a good start, but I’m not sure a character has the time required for triggering discern realities while the shadows are near.
Did Pippin take a methodical investigation while being held by the Palantir?
The options are good though. Perhaps I could use them to create one or two stand-alone moves. Thanks
Not knowing how your shadows present or what the characters’ experiences have been, i threw a generic move up there for you to hack at. Do with it what you will, and push/pull/prod it around to fit your setting if you wish. Hell, i’ve got no clue if someone has made it out of the shadows alive!
Your concern that you’re not sure a character has the time required for triggering discern realities might be due to our different ideas on how to trigger the move.
Does discern realities have a time-trigger? I listen for cues that someone is paying careful attention (“when you closely study”), rather than casually scanning. But i don’t require prolonged study….
>but I’m not sure a character has the time required for triggering discern realities while the shadows are near.
That would be a compendium class move, not a move for fighting these shadow creatures.
Compendium class moves are used AFTER this adventure
So Aaron Griffin, you’re saying that moves used to fight the shadows should be adventure moves, not moves from a compendium class.
The character in question HAS returned from the shadows and knows more about them than anyone else. He also managed to kill one (maybe?).
For this reason (the feat of being the only person to have killed one, or even seen one in good light) I thought he deserved a compendium class for his experiences. The druid class doesn’t really show off knowledge or experience with a continuing menace.
Think fiction first. What can you do besides fight the shadows more effectively? How has this person been transformed by their experience?
Peter J, I’ll answer your second question first.
His ‘father’ (actually a rock golem…) he believes was killed by the shadows. The animals in his forest are being driven mad and it’s not safe to go in there anymore.
He HATES these shadows with a passion. He has saved a few people from their influence, but he can’t be everywhere at once. He feels like he’s fighting a losing battle.
With that in mind, he still doesn’t know all that much about them. He doesn’t even know why they’re doing all this or where they go when it’s not night time.
The point of a compendium class is to give the character a new thing they can do to illustrate some trial they have been through. Perhaps someone was scarred by the magical Fire of Tr’nar and now can see in the dark. Or perhaps they were pulled into the shadow realm and returned, changed.
The move that Andrew Fish listed above is one of these. It shows what effects fighting with the shadows has had on the character, in the form of a move that only he can do.
Andrew Fish, I know that. I want to make a compendium class because he has experience with the shadows more than anyone else, but mechanically there’s no evidence of that.
Light Magic. You know, because of shadows. You could let the player multi class with the wizard if they aren’t one already but replace all of their spells with light based ones.
Aura of Excellence
A dome of brilliant light surrounds you providing you safe passage through the shadows realm. Take -1 ongoing while maintaining this effect.
But you don’t have make all completely new spells, just change the existing ones slightly.
Beam of Light
As per magic missile but illuminates the area around it
Maybe even having the light from their magic reveal the shadows true form, allowing others to attack them.
