“If the move is tied to some concept that multiple classes might have access to, like a move only accessible to those that have seen beyond Death’s Black Gates, you can create a compendium class for those moves.”

Has anyone actually made this CC? The “character who has come back from Death” concept is mentioned as an example CC a couple times in the rulebook, but as far as I can tell hasn’t actually been created, by the DW team or by fans. I have a dead paladin who will likely be affected by his experience once his pals resurrect him, and I don’t want to reinvent the wheel if someone’s already made this.

  1. There’s a few floating around: I think one is in the kickstarter compendium. And there’s one by Adam and Sage from waaaay back, I think called “the returned” or something like that?

But Dungeon World could always use more wheels, imho. Ask the paladin how death has changed him!

  2. As Ben Wray  mentioned, the kickstarter backer CC’s that come with the Dungeon World product when you purchase it has the “Wraithlander” for those who have returned from the afterlife. That’s probably the reason for the multiple references.

  3. Justin Wightbred  While that is an option, there’s a pretty big difference in changing race, and adding a CC. A race change to one of the Hungry or Restless dead would indicate that whatever you may have been before (elf, human, etc.) is no longer recognizable behind your rotting, but animate, corpse and you would lose your old racial move and the “look” for the new one.

Whereas a CC represents something added to your character, them getting even more badass! Instead of losing something they already had and turning into a zombie, mummy or other dead thing, they can be “From the Forbidden Land Returned” and gain various benefits, with extra advanced moves to choose from as well.

Really it comes down to what the GM sees as appropriate, but I usually would back CC’s as far as life-changing events go.

  4. I disagree that giving up a racial move is a big deal – and that coming back from the dead should (always) just be a positive effect. But I totally agree that it’s the call of the people at a particular table. Just giving an alternative option I have used successfully.

  5. Ah ha, that one in the KS Compendium is definitely what they’re referencing. It’s not exactly what I was hoping for, but it’s close enough I can base mine off of it. Thanks for pointing that one out!

Justin Wightbred, that’s not really what I’m looking for. I definitely don’t want to take away any moves they already have, and they’ll definitely still be human. I think this is really where a CC is appropriate. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Sean Fager, that’s a nice CC too! I don’t think it’s quite the direction I want to go, but I appreciate the link.
