I can’t find this particular “rule” but I feel like I read about it at one point if someone can refresh my memory. Is there gameplay mechanic where players accrue some time of points that they spend later when they make really good rolls?

I think the reverse is true. Fail a roll and gain an XP.
Though various moves use ‘Hold’. So the better you roll, generally the more hold you accrue to spent on mechanical / narrative effects.
Preparation grants several +1 tokens, I believe, but no more in general.
Man, what the heck am I thinking of. There was some mechanic that you were granted that you could “spend” later for various effects.
Are you thinking of Bolster? It’s on the general moves list – spend some downtime in study (or whatever) and get a few “plus one foward”s
The Advantage die from City of Judas?
This sounds like Bolster to me:

When you spend your leisure time in study, meditation, or hard practice, you gain preparation. If you prepare for a week or two, 1 preparation. If you prepare for a month or longer, 3 preparation. When your preparation pays off spend 1 preparation for +1 to any roll. You can only spend one preparation per roll.
