Ray of Enfeeblement
Was going over the idea for converting this spell to DW. Was thinking it would knock the damage die down a step, like B2d10 would become simply d10, d10 would become W2d10, W2d10 would step down a dice and become d8.
Would only apply to creatures who damaged via physical strength, not magical or supernatural attacks.
Seems too mechanical for the fiction first attitude of DW, any ideas? What do you think?
I would just have it step down and leave the b/w out of it.
I would step down a die (and drop the b/w) or make it a purely fictional thing.
K.I.S.S. Keep it simple stupid. Yeah drop the die down works best. Was overthinking it.
Ray of Enfeeblement
Range:Near
When struck with this ray a creature who uses it’s physical strength to attack or wield weapons has it’s damage die reduced by one step, d10 becomes d8, d6 becomes d4, d4 becomes d2, etc. Has no effect on spell casting, supernatural or psychic attacks or where fictionally inappropriate.
I think it needs more fictional punch, about how the creature is actually weaker. Unless this is a Cantrip.
I’d never choose it (as-is) over Magic Missile, Charm Person, etc.
Jeremy Strandberg Hmmm…. fair enough.
Ray of Enfeeblement
Range:Near
In addition to being unable to perform any feats of great strength akin to hurling boulders or sundering armor, when struck with this ray a creature who uses it’s physical strength to attack or wield weapons has it’s damage die reduced by one step, d10 becomes d8, d6 becomes d4, d4 becomes d2, etc. Has no effect on spell casting, supernatural or psychic attacks or where fictionally inappropriate.
That’ll keep those hill giants at bay.
I like it. Simplified wording: “The target loses any of its moves that depend on great physical strength, and if burdened it is slowed. Its nonmagical physical attacks have their damage die reduced by one size.” DW descriptions tend not to bother explicitly repeating “has no effect if it doesn’t make sense” because that’s axiomatic.
Thinking about it, this spell is one that’s most worth casting against solitary large creatures; against weenie hordelings it only affects one of them (and with the rule for multiple attacks it doesn’t even matter that one of the horde has a lowered damage die — it would get boosted back up anyway). Whereas with a big guy, the special moves could be very dangerous, and also he’s probably got enough hit points to live long enough to get a few whacks in, and the small damage reduction might add up. I could see wanting to have this spell available.
