Did someone purchase or played with these playbooks and would care to share their comments (please no Author’s commercials, I am interested in an unbiased opinion)?

  1. I can’t actually remember where I read it, but I’m sure when I signed up as a publisher that if you sell on DTRPG you aren’t allowed to (or at least are strongly discouraged from) leaving reviews on other products.

I suppose it’s to stop blatant attempts on slandering one another’s products, but in DW’s case it’s a problem as damn near everyone’s sold something!

  2. I see that the author, Jordan, doesn’t use G+ platform. Here’s the only post I found (I think he is the author):

    https://plus.google.com/108199311084872144016/posts/A25cAASf28w

There, you can also get a preview of one of his works.

I love really active authors (like David Guyll ), ’cause often they give you full beta version of their products, they are happy to get feedback, and they keep improving their works even after the publication. With those kind of authors I have a special feeling, ’cause I can give a hand, I can preview and enjoy their creations, AND I end to drop to them a “lot” of money 🙂 🙂 So I hope even others will follow that mentality.

  3. I think you can actually do a review, but they take off the review immediately if the other author complains you’re a competitor. Something like that happened to David Guyll .

The problem for me with these sets of playbooks is that there’s no preview whatsoever. DW playbooks are difficult to make right, I would at least see one full class or the first booklet page for the classes.

  4. Paride Papadia Thanks for the clarification, and agreed – I think the lack of info out there is letting this one down somewhat. (I will say the artwork is lovely, though! It’s a shame that’s all there is to go on.)

  5. OK, y’all got me curious. So I bought it.  Can’t really recommend it. Definitely not worth $12.

I’ll write a more thorough review later (probably over the weekend), but initial thoughts:

Some interesting ideas, but pooly executed.  Clunky mechanics, unbalanced choices, too many +X or -Y stuff and not enough fiction behind the moves & gear. A lot of “GM gets to arbitrarily bone you” moves. And while there’s implication that some of the classes weild tremendous power, that often doesn’t bear out in their moves or fictional positioning. The playbooks that don’t claim this sort of power are much more powerful.

It all seems largely untested and often unplayable.

  6. They are narrative roles, so they have a different focus than normal classes, but they could make for interesting fiction, if properly executed technically.

Or, they could be kind of compendium classes to be chosen at the beginning of the game by identifying the character with one of the roles.
