I am new to the game and have been trying to get my kids interested in the game, they are 7 and 9. We played for about 2 hours one night and they seemed to like it. However, they tend to try and take over the GM stuff. My question is: has anyone else had this happen to them, and if so, is there a good way to try and midigate it. I don’t want to discourage them from playing.

My kid did that too at first. My advise is to let them until they get more used to how the game works.
alternately, if they want to GM, let them GM, and then you can demonstrate how to be a good player.
Seriously, let them run the game if that’s what they want. It’ll be fantastic!
I have two about that age. When they jump in with things I respond with “Ok, that’s one idea” and then ask the other one what he thinks should happen. Then I chime in with “Ok, here’s what happens” and provide either a combination or tweak on the ideas they gave. They have the input but I don’t let go entirely. If one of them wanted to actually run I would totally be up for that as well!
I found myself saying “no” (or letting the other adult players say no) to an 8 year old at my game a couple of weeks ago.
Then I realized that there is absolutely nothing wrong with her driving the story, embellishing details, and walking right out of the bounds of the moves and into the narrative. And it’s more fun that way– the session where I just let her go was the best session of an RPG ever.
tl;dr: Let them. You’ll have more fun. Trust me.
Suddenly the cookie dragon breathes rainbows at you…
The popular response seems to be “let them”, which I agree with. This could also be a good way to teach them how to take turns.
