So, last night as I was falling asleep I had this idea about interesting in media res starters for a dungeon world game. I thought it might be interesting to show a picture to the players and start asking questions…
This was the first picture that came to my mind…
I was thinking it would be fun to start asking questions… What is on the scroll the two in front are looking at? Who are those two? What is the Wizard discussing with the other fighter? Who here is a hireling? How many lizard men have you killed already? How are you planning on getting out? What do you know stands between you and the exit? How much is that gem worth. Does the demon it idolizes care?
That actually brings up a cool idea: use the covers of old adventure modules as kick-offs for DW sessions!
And Andy Hauge You just saw my cunning idea… That’s exactly what I was thinking. You can go further — new modules, great internal art — Lots of places. I tend to be very visual and this immediately grabbed me.
I love that picture from the player’s handbook. I imagined a lot of things about it.
Great idea!
Find great fantasy art, run a session. Repeat
.
I’ve been using Visions of War (Wayne Reynolds) to give the players some character inspiration, but THIS? This is Genius!
Very useful idea!
This is a really great idea and I want to try it with a group tonight, but they already know the PHB picture off by heart and I’d like to throw them something new. Anybody got any recommended bits of old art that make great stories?
Hey Marcus Bendall ! Its not old per se, but its old school: Anything By Peter Mullen is exceptional…

I ran a game based on the ‘Lunar Offering’ that was wickedly fun!
