Hosting a game night at the school where I teach tonight, and expecting 10+ people to attend.

Hosting a game night at the school where I teach tonight, and expecting 10+ people to attend. I want something raucous and fun, so I’m thinking about running a DW/WoD tournament/race. My idea is to divide them into two parties, and have each elect a leader/caller. Each party starts at one end of the same dungeon complex, and tries to reach the prize/artifact in the center. I map it out for them as they go on an overhead projector, so they can see their relative progress, and alternate action between the parties. Each party leader is responsible for listening to their team and declaring the team’s action when it’s their turn, in order to keep things moving quickly.

But! I don’t have a lot of time to prep, and I want a deadly, puzzle-y dungeon for them to navigate — at least something bare-bones from which I can improv. Any suggestions???

  1. Have you checked out the OnePageDungeon archives?  With five minutes of editing most of their maps could be made into something for your projector.

    My gut says this one

Might need slight re-skinning for the WoD players.  This seems combat heavy.  I’d include a number of rooms wherein they discover additional traps, and a number where they have to reveal in a ten-twenty second flashback narrative something about their characters.  At the end of the flashback have them pick two words related to their flashback.  The next time someone has to do the flashback thing they have to use that word as a launch point.  That might be my narrative slant showing, but if it worked it’d allow character development without trying to cram a narrative into the dungeon itself.

Ex : “When I was 23 I went on a blind date with Abigale.  We went to a midnight showing of Dead Alive.  She was so funny and charming.  It’s obvious now, but at the time I didn’t know vampires actually existed.  A few weeks later I became a man and a vampire within the same night.  Errr, tags of Love and Betrayal.”

“I can do both!  I never LOVED anyone as much as I loved the feeling of money in my hands.  Maybe that’s why I betrayed my tribe to the hunters for thirty pieces of silver.  Well, three million dollars, but who is counting?  Tags of… money and silver.”

“I was shot with a silver bullet once.  The priest was a crazy person, but on that night he was crazy in just the right way…..” etc

Anyway, rambling aside, the OnePageDungeon website is

  2. Thanks for the suggestions Sean, I have all of the 1PDs. I will go through my binder to see if any jump out. I like the flashback idea! Maybe too much for what I’m picturing, though.

  3. Only six people showed, so I just ran a Funnel game using Servants of the Cinder Queen, which went great (one survivor). I did a lot of panicky prep for the other thing, though, and if I have time I’m going to codify it a bit more in case I find myself in a similar situation in the future. I don’t like breaking up a big group on game night, so I need more fun tools for dealing with 8 or more players.
