So this has probably been asked a couple of times, but since it came up in the yesterday’s game : can the paladin heal himself?

The 7-9 result indicates to me that they can’t.
When you touch someone, skin to skin, and pray for their well-being , roll+CHA. ✴On a 10+ you heal 1d8 damage or remove one disease. ✴On a 7–9, they are healed, but the damage or disease is transferred to you.
The damage I heal from myself is transferred to me? Um.
No!
Nope.
David Guyll Yeah, I think that’s where the ambiguity creeps in, too. Add “else” after “someone” and you’re golden.
David Guyll That’s how I took it! But I felt I should point out that the language as-is can confuse the matter. 🙂
No, why you either buy swamp-water tasting healing potions or protect the cleric.
A few things,
If self heal then 7-9 is boring = bad
Also the paladin is a champion of the light. They martyr themselves for other people; not heal themselves
Not to mention with stuff like Bloody Aegis, there are a number of ways for Paladins to save themselves from damage that don’t involve keeping their healing mojo to themselves. 🙂
The Paladin isn’t allowed to touch himself. It’s against his religion. 😉

Yeah, we too head a laugh about the paladin touching himself. But i didnt allow it, since it wouldnt make no sense if he transferred the same exact wounds onto himself, plus hes all bonkers about sacrificing himself for others and so on.
But yeah, the ambiguity stays somehow.
If the Paladin touched himself, his God(s) would know. Which is far worse than ever gaining some HP relief from the experience.
Our Paladin, Octavian who was on a quest to slay Tonks – evil wizard extraordinaire (a retired pc). Octavian used the lay on (gauntleted) hands move as an expression of self-flagellation, part of the ritual of cleansing for his quest. He saw any temptation to his vow of temperance as a disease, but unfortunately had an addiction to the unbearably pleasurable elf-mistress Blossom. Who ‘worked’ at the Raw Prawn bawdy house.
Octavian had to lay on hands to himself often simply to ‘cleanse’ the dis-ease of his own debauched activities. It was effing awesome.
What about healing yourself through the Divine Favor move, Cleric spells, and including yourself in your interpretation of ally?
It’s not that the paladin is forbidden to heal him/herself, just that the lay on hands is for only use with helping others. You can still use other healing items or skills on yourself but any move that says ‘heal an ally’ would only work on yourself if the GM & deity allowed it.
It is not the GMs job to allow or forbid anything. It’s table consensus.
