I’ve put up some new things for sale in my DTRPG account, for those who like that sort of thing. They each come with previews you can look at, too, so you can try before you buy.
These new playbooks are rewrites/re-imaginings of The Mage, which is my most popular playbook of all time. Due to its popularity, mixed with its extreme open-endedness and its habit of operating on a scale completely differently than other playbooks do, I’ve long been meaning to give it an overhaul. Rather than try to rewrite a generic wizard replacement playbook, though, I instead decided to tackle the task of making all of the Spell Focuses into their own, unique playbooks!
I am only a little bit insane.
Anyway, here they are, give them a look!

I have more planned, and once I get a few more out there will be a bulk bundle available at discount, if you’re the kind of person who wants all of them in one place.

I love the idea of specialized mages. Great work Jacob! Once the bundle is out, I’ll snatch these up.
Once the bundle is released I will grab them immediately. Glad to see you’re still working on new Playbooks =D
Those Death Moves are brilliant.
Those are great. I’m playing a Star focused Mage in a pbp game, and can’t wait to see what you do with that.
Star Mage is one of the ones I’ve got next in line, conveniently. Here, have a small preview: http://www.mediafire.com/view/nx1rmrcl1acx33a/The%20Star%20Mage%201.pdf
This stuff is incredible. As has been said, when the bundle comes hither, it is mine!
Smart guys can wait for bundles, but my wallet is ruled by the covetous fire that burns in my soul!
i must have them!
I will certainly be buying the bundle.
The Mage is my favourite DW Playbook ever. I usually GM, but my next PC will definitely be a Mage. Congratulations again on its design, it’s flavourful and fits DW way more than the Vancian spellcaster, IMHO. Also, I’m looking forward to the Specialist Mage bundle, as soon as it’s available.
If you don’t mind me asking, Jacob, do you have any pointers on creating new Spell Foci for the Mage, other than the ones listed in the Alternative Playbook bundle? Thanks!
I don’t think there’s any real secret to it. You come up with a thematic name for what you want, let’s say The Lich.
First thing, you come up with three Lich things you want your mage to do, and put them down as Aligned. So, let’s say your Lich Mage can Raise The Dead, Command Lost Souls, and Defy Death. Well, actually, Defy Death could be used to Raise the Dead, and it’s more succinct/flavorful, so let’s toss that first one and replace it with something else. How about Decay Flesh? Yeah, that sounds good, go with that.
Then, you come up with two things that that focus can NEVER do. Obviously, a Lich cannot Heal or Help the Living, but what else? A Lich probably can’t use much strength or speed, so let’s go with Augmenting the Body as a second Opposed option. This Lich is all about weakening things, not strengthening them.
Lastly, you pick some looks. What kind of creepy things would a Lich Mage have going on? With all that done, you’ll end up with something like this:
Focus: The Lich
Look: Rotting Flesh, Skeletal Frame, or Empty Eye Sockets
Aligned: Defying Death, Decaying Flesh, and Commanding Lost Souls
Opposed: Augmenting the Body, Healing or Helping the Living
You’re rockin my world Jacob Randolph! **starts taking notes**
Jacob, thank you so much for your answer! It really helped. So, I’ll start tinkering with it and as soon as I have some new Foci down, I’ll share them here. Thanks!
