I’m starting up a game with a new group tomorrow evening. I could use some inspiration for a good dungeon starter to get them hooked. What are some of the best set ups you’ve used so far? Some that didn’t work out so well?
This will be my 2nd time starting a game (my other campaign has gone 10 sessions so far). I could use the inspiration.
I’ve started before with the PCs in the King’s dungeon. Gave each character an opening move (IE, the rogue rolls to see what gear they managed to keep, a cleric to determine the state of their church/flock), and just rolled from there.
It all hangs on the questions you ask. They set the tone for the game.
If you want something fun, start em off with a wild and crazy question.
I once asked “Why is there a dinosaur chasing you guys?”
A player responded “Because we have one of her eggs.”
And off we went!
Planarch Codex powered a fantastic campaign for me this past year.

But yeah, the questions approach is pretty golden. Questions snowball just like moves!
I really like Blackmoore (download here):

and the Sky chain, here:

But all of those can give you some ideas for a new game.
I’ve had good luck with Marshall Miller ‘s dungeon starters, specifically The Frozen South, The Goblin Hole, and The Shallow Sea.
Going down the questions road….what have been some of your favorite loaded questions to open with?
Ask the Druid “why have you brought your companions to your homeland?”
I always set the game in the Druid’s homeland!
