I took some time this morning to quickly share my thoughts on my very first Dungeon World game played last night. The TL;DR version is, we all had an amazing time, and will certainly be playing again.

Sounds like you had a fun time! Deciding on a fair and interesting 7-9 result can be hard sometimes. In Hack and Slash, the easiest and most common is “you hit them and they hit you” (but described in more cinematic detail) and both damages are rolled. Another that I’ve used sometimes is having their weapon stuck in the corpse, or disarmed somehow after the damage is dealt. If possible, I’ll also give the players a choice of 2 options so they can get half of what they wanted, but not all of it. I liked your trap choice idea.
Tom Miskey I did a few disarms, but that’s good to note – hitting them back as well, on a 7-9. I didn’t do that as often as I should have. And yes, we did indeed have a good time – I’m looking forward to playing again 😉
I have a similar problem coming up with good results for a 7-9 for my players. I think I lean too heavily on the damage move, and the players were really hurting after the last combat. That said, I think the fight itself was too tough.
Michael Barrett I’m curious, what made your fight too tough (setting aside, as you have, the regular use of the damage move on a 7-9)? Was it too many mobs? The environment? etc
