OH GOD. No wonder my players felt so fragile. When calculating max health, use:
“Your Constitution (the score, not the modifier)”
I don’t know how I missed that you use the SCORE not the MODIFIER. My players just got a whole lot stronger…

Wait… Really? Maybe that’s why I killed my wizard during the first fight
Yes, you add the whole score (such as 12 or 15), not just the bonus.
A first-time player asked me the same thing today, and I made the mistake myself with my first character =)
Yes the least amount of HP anyone should have is 12. A level 1 Wizard with an 8 constitution.
We did that. Tensest session ever.
keep in mind, if it’s written “something + CON” then it’s the modifier. If it’s written “+ CONSTITUTION” then it’s the score…
It is a (cough) common mistake.
tony dowler We did that TWICE, with two updates of the game.
I did the opposite for load. Everyone could carry everything, then I looked closer and it says “STR” not “strength”.
Well, it has been STR, then Strength, than back to STR with load, depending on edition.
sigh sorry guys!
That said, I like the CON-instead-of-Constitution mod for playing a super fast game!
Michael Walsh We did that too! 😀
