I really like these moves for stealth from Apocalypse World:
Hide In Shadows: When you attempt to move stealthily, roll +DEX. on a 10+ choose two, on a 7-9 choose 1:
* You get to where you’re going.
* You don’t get spotted.
Pick Pockets: When you try and steal something, roll +DEX. on a 10+ choose two, on a 7-9 choose 1:
* You get it.
* You get away clean.
Yep. I basically use those as my 7-9 options on Defy Danger anyway. But they make perfect sense in the game. But where do you put them? Just for the thief? The thief should be even better at this stuff then everyone else.
That’s a good point. I wish there was a way to emphasize a stealthy character. Anyone could hide in shadows or attempt a pick pocket, but training should give you an advantage.
I don’t feel the Hide in Shadows move reads well. The 7-9 result doesn’t feel like a “success”, even though it should.
I’d rather write it as:
Hide In Shadows
When you go somewhere while avoiding detection, roll+DEX. On a 10+ you get there, and no one notice you. On a 7-9 choose 1:
• It’s a only a matter of time before someone notices you’re here.
• The place you want to go is guarded more heavily than you thought.
This makes the 7-9 results feel more like a success I think.
I mean, getting spotted while sneaking around just feels like a failure. As do the “you don’t get there” result.
I like the “you don’t get there” result – You stay hidden, so the enemy doesn’t know where you are exactly, but maybe the guard’s patrol route kept you stuck in one place longer than you intended and you may miss an opportunity.
