The Mutant is far and away the coolest and most interesting part of this supplement. The rest of it isn’t bad, although the reskins of the Paladin and the Fighter could definitely stand to be more interesting, but The Mutant is definitely the takeaway from this book. I recommend it for that alone.
Interesting you say that Jacob, the Earthling really grabbed me and the Mutant left me cold. What did you like about the Mutant?
The Mutant does something no other class in DW does. It’s entirely unique, and the way it accomplishes things is really neat. It is a big ball of monster moves that shifts and changes as it needs to, and that’s really cool and clever.
Can anyone tell me if this mixes with, or stands alone from DungeonWorld and its classes? I have a family member who loves this sort of pulp, but we’d be limited by 4 classes.
It does mix alright with the Dungeon World core classes, but not great. The core DW classes are way too strongly associated with D&Desque dungeon crawling, in my experience. However, essentially all of the Inverse World classes fit in nicely with a sci fi adventure, especially the Captain and Mechanic. You can get those playbooks by late-backing the kickstarter, since the PDF hasn’t been released yet: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1552912590/inverse-world-a-dungeon-world-sourcebook/posts/577722
Nice, thanks Jacob, thats just the sort of advice I was looking for. I’m new to DW, having only played a few times. I’ll be running my first session tonight, and hopefully many more to come. My father-in-law loves the old pulp scifi, and I’d love to run a game for him using this.
So… I contacted you and sent payment as a late backer about a week ago, then got no response…
Has anyone seen Jacob Randolph? We’d like to play you game…
Sorry, I’ve only been sending out the emails about once a week, I will get right on that. They all have to be done manually and my current job has been kicking my butt, so I have not been as on top of this as I would have liked. I will send you an email shortly.
Woohoo!
alright, finally sent it out. You should have playbooks sitting in your email, Andrew. Sorry for the wait.
Got it! Thanks Jacob. We’re looking forward to exploring the Setting when the PDF is finished.
