When you forge a pact with the Spirits of the Land, the Elements and the primal Beastkings you may take this move the next time you level up:

Compendium Class Warden

Inspired by my favorite 4e Class, the transforming Warden.

The most extensive thing I wrote for DW until now but i had lot of fun with this, writing up Guardian Forms really is cool.

Giving you just 4 forms might be a bit few but this means you have to choose. You can also work with your GM on what kinds of things you have to do for the spirits so that they grant you additional forms.

They tend to be a bit strong i think but the 7-9 effect on them will change up the battlefield and situation pretty good. You will have to figure out how long you will want to stay in a chosen form and reap it’s passive benefits and when to unleash PRIMAL POWER! I like that.

I am not sure if it is cool to just give them a limited multiclass into Druid but i felt those are the best moves for communing with the primal spirits.

  1. I really like the Warden. Like your take on the Warlock, this almost seems like a better Warden, than the 4e version.

    Generally …. I am strongly thinking about a 4e-conversion of Dungeon World – which means more races and also more class-specific moves for more races.

  2. Out of your CCs this is by far the best. Liked it very much. Though I’d let shapechage and assume guardian form at the same time, why not?

    Also one cosmetic thing: when you’ve got three options to choose from, it’s “on 10+ all three” instead of “on 10+ choose three” .

  3. if anyone else is interested in writing Guardian Forms, feel free ^^

    Not sure if this can support a whole base class but having more options is fun ^^

  4. Bernd Pressler pointed out, that the 7-9 on the GF moves was to destructive and might hinder the whole group more then help them.

    Because of that players might be to cautious in actually using that move thereby destroying the purpose of even having the move.

    What do you think?

  5. Please note: I am coming from MHR and 4e, where there is almost no bad results for trying to use a feature of your character. I am slowly relearning my patterns with DW – nevertheless some outcomes are very dangerous, and I am indeed not sure about those. My thinking is: You build a feature into a (compendium) class, and you want to make it as appealing as possible.

    comments highly welcome 🙂

    The Warlock by Tim Franzke has a similiar mechanic, where basic features of the class are dangerous. You rest means you gamble for a soul shard, which can go bad. You might lose XP, suddenly carry a debt to another power. But that one first and foremost is “dangerous” (or I would rather say interesting) for the character itself. It does not directly damage the group she is travelling with.

    So the Warlock presented does endanger himself. And she tends to do so in a non-dangerous situation. When making camp.

    The Warden does similiar thingsin a more extreme way: iT does carry danger for himself and her allies in a directly dangerous situation. You use the forms of the Warden in action scenes mostly, when there is direct inherent danger already. Mostly. WHen you don’t roll good enough you damage your enemy, yourself and your allies. And that I do consider very dangerous.

  6. I don’t know, may be this:

    On a hit, you erupt a blinding flash. On 10+ choose 2, on 7-9 choose 1:

    * The searing light deals damage

    * Your allies are safe

    * Undead suffer extreme harm

    Or may be on 10+ all 3, on 7-9 2.

  7. the nice thing about the Guardian Forms:

    I can now reference them in other classes. Example:

    Beastly Guardian

    You were blessed by primal spirits. Choose an animal based Guardian Form and get the Take a Guardian Form move
