I seem to be all about magic items lately. I just wanted to do a take on the classic ring of invisibility. My group’s thief needs some help being sneaky and I thought I’d throw him a bone. Critique appreciated.

I have been busy creating a world for my DW group in my spare time, and I have hit an obstacle regarding custom item…

I have been busy creating a world for my DW group in my spare time, and I have hit an obstacle regarding custom item creation. What are the basic guidelines in creating custom items? What are all the factors that I need to take into consideration? Is it like creating a custom class’ abilities with its own ability or abilities? Do I place any specific restrictions on it as to who may use it or not?

I have, in the past, made one or two custom items, but those have only been used by the players once or not at all. I hope to make the items in my new world more permanent and useful, but still keep the players aware of the fact that unique items are available to them. (e.g.) I once created a “blink dagger”, but the players almost instantly forgot about it. I gave it to a Shadow Dancer (a dexterity based custom class my friend was play testing), a character that could truly take advantage of the extra mobility, but the player forgot about it almost instantly. I’m not saying he was a boring player at the table (he is actually very fun to play with), I just want to know what might have caused the lack of interest in an item that I thought could be very interesting.

I hope I made my question(s) and my problem clear. I would love to hear what you guys have to say. Thanks!

So this is an item, or really a type of item, I’ve been struggling with.

So this is an item, or really a type of item, I’ve been struggling with. It still needs a lot of work. And I thought I’d see if anyone here had advice. Looking for a better name too.

Elemental Skull

Elemental Skulls are small skull shaped carvings made of exotic materials like onyx, marble, jade, or obsidian. The skulls have hinged jaws which open and will hang open unless held shut. When open a small torrent of either water, fire, sand, or air is released. Each skull produces a specific element. However, it is difficult to tell which element a given skull produces and how much it produces without first opening it. Further, the jaws are often held closed by flimsy clasps which have a tendency to break.

Custom Move

When you open a skull who’s element you are unaware of roll +WIS. On a 10+ choose from water, fire, air, or sand. A small amount of the chosen element is released without incident. On a 7-9 choose from water, fire, air or sand. A problematic amount is released. The GM will describe the trouble it causes. On a 6 or less the latch breaks and a random element streams out in a torrent filling the immediate area.

When you open a skull you are familiar with roll +WIS. On a 10+ the skull disgorges a small amount of its element. On a 7-9 choose 2:

The skull’s latch does not break

The skull does not attract attention

The skull releases the needed amount of its element

If a character is carrying an element skull on their person. The GM gains this additional Dungeon Move:

•The latch on the elemental skull breaks or comes loose

Grom’s Wax Finger:

A long thick wax finger molded after Grom’s fingers. When you squeeze one of Grom’s wax fingers in your hand it melts into your skin. Within moments another finger will grow on your hand. If you had previously lost a finger the injury is healed. If you hadn’t.. well lucky you! You now have one to lose.

A Bag of Runes:

A bag with mystical runes engraved on pieces of bone on one side. The owner may cast the rune into the air three times a day and ask a yes or no question. The runes will answer yes by all returning to earth on the rune side and no by all returning to earth on the blank side.

Persephone’s Cracked Hand-mirror

Once a beautiful gift from a Lord Kinnith, Servitor of one of The Old Lich Kings, to his beloved Persephone, kidnapped from her parent’s home and locked within the walls of his capital city’s great cemetery. The mirror allowed her to converse with the bodies interned therein to alleviate the boredom of being trapped away from the world.  It cracked the day she died.  The mirror itself is simply wrought, made of gold with a oblong viewing surface the size of a genteel lady’s hand.  A single crack runs from the upper left portion to the right side of the mirror near the middle of the viewing surface.

As soon as a corpse is seen within the mirror the one who holds it becomes intuitively aware of the mirror’s magic power.

When a corpse is viewed in the mirror by the person holding it :

That person may ask a single question of the spirit which used to reside in the corpse.  It will answer the question truthfully to the extent of the knowledge it had in life.  The question and answer are telepathic and transcend language.

The spirit will then ask a single question to the mirror bearer.  They must answer truthfully and without subterfuge, like the spirit did, but must answer aloud in at least a conversational tone.  All those who hear the answer will understand what has been said, regardless of their inability to hear the question or any language barriers.  If the answer is false, incomplete, or veers from the objective truth (at least as far as the bearer knows it) the reflective surface will shatter into a thousand shards.  Although the hand mirror is inherently valuable, being made of gold, the magic within the mirror will be lost forever.

The dead see almost all things, and the spirits have a way of always asking the wrong question, even if doing so requires specific knowledge the creature could not possibly have had in life.

The Paired Locket:

The Paired Locket:

The Paired Locket:

This is a large, brass, heart-shaped locket with two harsh scratch marks over the surface. The locket is matched with an exact identical. When you open the locket it creates a small portal to the other. This is how two lovers would be able to communicate with each other when they were apart.

If your adventurers find both lockets, they will be irreplaceable communication devices. Most likely your adventurers will find one, but what’s on the other end? An ocean, a strange but exciting character, or even better, space? They’d get a jet of water, a plot hook, and a vacuum. Awesome possibilities and fun play!

Alleal’s Whistle:

Alleal’s Whistle:

Alleal’s Whistle:

A long silver whistle, when you blow it, it emits a loud shriek barely in your hearing range. You also turn invisible! You’re invisible until you attack or you dismiss it. While invisibility is useful , you’ll need it, because any monsters in the vicinity will have heard the whistle, and unfortunately some are quite proficient with hearing and scent.

If you blow the whistle while you are invisible, anything which is hidden by magic within your range of sight will be shown to you.

Any advice or thoughts are welcome as I am new to this, thanks!

You have an adorable pet spider. When you show your pet spider to someone, roll+Charisma. *On a 10+, choose 3. *On a 7-9, choose 1.

-They do anything not to be kept in its presence, but are to polite too show it

-The person faints and you can rob them.

-They start to panic, you get + 1 forward to parley with them through intimidation.

-They respect your love for spiders and tell you a rumor.

-They run scared  and drop something.
