Joeb Bittman did a wonderful one page a few years back that I’ve converted for my niece’s “Stranger Things” adventures.
Here are my conversion notes: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7cav44145d9YjloN1pieDJxWFU/view?usp=sharing
I’ve based two dungeon starters on her current epic and this provided a nice conclusion: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7cav44145d9NDhaODNvX2VCZ1E/view?usp=sharing and https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7cav44145d9WTNNQmV3Ym9lWnc/view?usp=sharing
I used this for the lizardman army: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7cav44145d9em0zb05xTzMyUW8/view?usp=sharing
I’ve heard Jobe based a longer adventure on this but I can’t find it anywhere.
(FYI for those interested the Idol was restored by feeding it the “summoning” gem from the altar starter while the “gate” gem sent the idol to the Vale of Shadows to trap Demogorgon within it there forever…or until Bridget & Company’s next adventure!)

I had fun creating it, and I want to give a special thanks to my son (Celebrimbor the Wizard in our one-on-one games) for the interior artwork, and also to Logan Howard for his inspiration and some sage advice!

Labyrinth of the Tombs of Atuan Revised
Labyrinth of the Tombs of Atuan Revised
Just a little revision to my most minor of creations, but I ran it again and I think it works better now with the new “labyrinth rules”. It is a fun dungeon to use with newbies as you can have the monster eat or drain a minstrel and depart while they are learning the ropes.

For those interested this starter was always intended to be the sequel:

Session Zero, Issue 1: The Smoldering Swamp will be available on DTRPG later this week. I had hoped to push it out today, but my son is doing the interior artwork for me (so don’t expect top-notch graphics) and I’m still waiting on four images. I will possibly move towards using stock images for future issues, but it was fun working with him on this and the next issue will be one of his favorite settings: Skyrim. So he will likely illustrate that one as well before I start pulling stock images.
Based on my schedule, it will most likely be Friday when you see it on DTRPG as a PWYW product.
2nd attempt at a map dungeon starter.
2nd attempt at a map dungeon starter. The earlier version is there for those that would like a blank one of the map with just the generic titles to make your own. I think there is enough there to get a group started on a first session using the playbook and few monsters from the book. If any are interested I could see developing each of these areas as its own traditional dungeon starter.
Lots of homage to others and the stories that inspire us to play and the original dungeon starters that I used when first starting the game.
Feel free to use in any way you like (as long as you keep the signature and date of the original). Created in Pages using google fonts on top of an original scan of the map I made.
So I like the idea of dungeon starters.
So I like the idea of dungeon starters. I haven’t seen one that was just a map. I did this afternoon with a bit of free time. I used generic names but tried to put enough there to spark the imagination.
From here looking at the map you could use for a first session. What questions naturally come up when you see this map? Then you can make it less generic and start filling in some details during character creation.
You can put some themes that you may want in the game by your initial questions. I may come up with three different sets of questions to go with this map for different kind of campaigns. Example: if the first question you have to a player is “which one of the vassal baronies have you come from, why are you loyal to the rebellious Baron. Name him.” is a very different question from “why has the High King summoned you to his court from the vassal baronies. Which loyal Baron are you representing, and why is the call so urgent?” .
I am not saying this is a very good map, there are plenty out there on the internet but I made this one specifically for dungeon world, and I give permission for any and all to use for any use they want (just keep the signature on it). I did it pencil with calligraphy pen. It is obviously a throwback to medieval europe with some Alberta Badlands thrown in.
Just read the Carcosa setting description / dungeon starter from The Gauntlet’s “Codex Yellow.”
Just read the Carcosa setting description / dungeon starter from The Gauntlet’s “Codex Yellow.”
Wowowow. I love it. It’s extremely atmospheric, and manages to convey an incredible sense of place (and displacement and instability and alienation) in an incredibly brief span of words.
And the very next piece in the Codex has the “Planeshift die”, which I looked at and went, “Oh. That needs to be modified just slightly and transplanted right into Carcosa, yes it does.”
Fantastic. I was pretty hesitant to sign up for a recurring fee (I dislike Patreon in this way; personal preference is to buy good products, not subsidize the process) in becoming a Gauntlet Patron (the way to get access to Codex), and this alone is more than the price of entry. Just fantastic.
